Extra protection for the buggy and its occupants come in the form of a rear roll bar and a skid plate to shield the floor pan. That floorpan is a variation of the VW Group's MEB platform, and the concept has been produced, in part, to demonstrate its versatility. While the original buggies were rear-engined and rear-wheel drive, the concept鈥檚 use of electric motors would enable the possibility of a twin-motor setup for four wheel drive. Piech Mark Zero Concept Leaked Ahead Of Geneva Debut

Currently, the market is awash with all-electric start-up car brands, and this Swiss-built GT car could be the latest addition to the flood. Called the Piech Mark Zero, it鈥檚 an electric sports car built by a new company fronted by the son of Ferdinand Piech, the former head of Volkswagen. These leaked teaser images preview the car鈥檚 design ahead of its launch at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Full performance specifications for the Mark Zero are yet to be announced. The battery packs are mounted in the car鈥檚 transmission tunnel and on the rear axle, which Piech states will provide a driving experience closer to that of an internal combustion-engined car. The Swiss start-up also claims that the Mark Zero鈥檚 architecture will be modular, allowing its battery packs and hardware to be replaced as technology advances. Potentially, Piech鈥檚 modular architecture could offer buyers a range of powertrains, including internal combustion engines, various hybrid systems and even a fuel-cell driven option. In addition, the Swiss firm plans to make its platform available to other manufacturers. For the next few years, Piech has planned a range of cars, consisting of a two-seat sports car, a four-seat saloon and a sporty SUV, built on the Mark Zero鈥檚 underpinnings. Release dates for these upcoming Piech models are yet to be announced.

Starting with the likes of the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and Peugeot 308, then moving up to the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series at the premium end of things. Moving up in size, there are now hatch versions of the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia and BMW 3 Series, and even a racy-looking A5 Sportback from Audi. At the very top of the tree, the Audi A7 Sportback, Tesla Model S and Porsche Panamera are the most luxurious hatchbacks you can buy. SUVs use the hatchback boot style too. Looking for a new car?

Since the second-generation Dacia Duster hit UK roads back in June, engine choice has been limited to one naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre petrol motor. By March there will be a couple of more sophisticated motors to pick from: two variants of a 1.3-litre unit found in the Nissan Qashqai and Mercedes A-Class. But, in the meantime, a new diesel has doubled the under-bonnet options for Duster buyers. So does this add to the appeal of this cheap and cheerful SUV? The 1.5-litre dCi is carried over from the old Duster, but has been updated for 2019. Like the upcoming 1.3, it鈥檚 found in a range of Nissan, Renault and Mercedes models. As elsewhere, the revised engine benefits from a modest 5bhp hike over the old Duster鈥檚 diesel, and a useful torque increase thanks to an overboost function. An AdBlue system helps cut emissions, too. On the road you鈥檒l notice there鈥檚 not much in the way of soundproofing.

As a result, and as before, it鈥檚 fairly audible on start-up and under hard acceleration. But this isn鈥檛 a deal-breaker because, for the most part, it鈥檚 among the smoothest small diesels on sale. Although performance is steady rather than thrilling (0-62mph takes 11.8 seconds), the power delivery is linear and there鈥檚 a decent shove of torque throughout the rev range. It鈥檚 certainly livelier than the breathless 1.6 petrol which, without a turbo, needs to be worked pretty hard to extract any kind of performance. The petrol has a five-speed manual, while the diesel comes with a notchy six-speed transmission. The new Duster sits on the same platform as the previous model: a stretched version of the Nissan Juke鈥檚 underpinnings. But pronounced body roll and lifeless steering mean it鈥檚 not the sharpest compact SUV on the market. That numb set-up is suitably light, however, making the Dacia feel easy to drive and manoeuvre at low speeds. You鈥檇 expect a car with this much ground clearance and high-profile tyres to be really comfy.

Audi PB18 E-Tron Concept

Following its world debut at the Monterey Car Week, the new Audi PB18 E-Tron concept traveled to Paris for its European premiere. The battery-electric supercar study is reportedly previewing the replacement of the Audi R8, featuring three electric motors with a combined output of 671 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque. The front axle is powered by a single 201 hp electric motor while the rear axle gets the other two, complete with 604 hp. Audi claims that the PB18 E-Tron鈥檚 electric powertrain is able to deliver peak power of 764 hp for short bursts, making it capable of a 0-100 km/h in less than two seconds. The design is unsurprisingly rather sharp, featuring a long roof line that resembles that of a shooting brake concept, widely extended wheel arches and a pretty large interpretation of Audi鈥檚 Singleframe front grille. The interior adopts a variable layout, meaning it can be converted from a regular two-seater to a single-seater with the driver sitting in the middle. This was made possible thanks to the adoption of fully electronic steering, throttle and braking operations. The long roof line also gives the PB18 E-Tron a rather large boot capacity, with 470 liters on offer.

It does fall behind for overall space and it鈥檚 darker in the back as well, due to the small, tapered rear windows. You do get a cup-holder in the doors, which is useful, but otherwise storage is only average. Even though it costs more than its competitors on test, the Corolla offers the most safety kit. Toyota鈥檚 five-year, 100,000-mile warranty is great, too, but the brand鈥檚 12th place out of 26 marques in the manufacturers鈥?chart of our Driver Power 2018 owner satisfaction survey was only average. The hybrid Corolla returned a fuel economy figure of 44.3mpg on our test, which was ahead of the Golf鈥檚 41.9mpg and the Peugeot鈥檚 38.5mpg returns. Low CO2 emissions of 83g/km put the Toyota in the 19 per cent Benefit-in-Kind tax bracket for company car users, so lower-rate earners will only pay 拢1,033 a year to run one. That鈥檚 less than the 拢1,174 and 拢1,243 it will cost for the Volkswagen and 308 respectively.

The Volkswagen Golf is our favourite family hatch and therefore the model to beat here. The 128bhp 1.5-litre petrol TSI version in GT trim is the highest spec available with this comparable engine to the Toyota for power, although it鈥檚 not a hybrid. This Golf uses petrol power alone. The 1.5-litre TSI turbo delivers 128bhp and 200Nm of torque to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch auto box. Some GT models also have lowered suspension over the standard car, but our 128bhp version features the normal set-up. The Golf鈥檚 interior is simple and functional, but it鈥檚 also well built and uses soft-touch materials that make it the most upmarket model of the trio. Adding to the classy image is the excellent infotainment system. The eight-inch set-up is the most modern-looking here and it鈥檚 standard on the GT (although the car in our pictures is an SE Nav). It includes smartphone connectivity which, sadly, is not yet offered on the Corolla. You can also add a 12.3-inch TFT Active Info Display digital dashboard for 拢495.

This is larger than the Toyota鈥檚 seven-inch set-up and replaces the traditional analogue dials behind the wheel. In addition, GT spec includes upgraded upholstery, ambient lighting, selectable driving modes and adaptive cruise control. However, some features that are standard on the Corolla, such as a reversing camera and LED headlights, are optional (at 拢340 and 拢995 respectively). Even so, add these extras and the Volkswagen still works out cheaper. The Golf gets each aspect of the driving experience just right, which is why it鈥檚 one of our favourite cars. For a start, it鈥檚 quiet and calm inside even at high speed, and the suspension soaks up lumps and bumps in the road surface adequately enough. Only occasionally does it bounce abruptly. At least body control is great, which makes it enjoyable on a twisty country road as well, since it remains tied down even over rough tarmac. Steering is direct, while there鈥檚 also plenty of grip.

New Porsche Concept Car

Who would have thought that you could have a mean looking, fast racing, good looking sports car that also has impressive green credentials? Well, that's exactly what Porsche are proposing with their latest concept car: the Porsche 918 Spyder. Let's take a closer look. Unveiled on the eve of the famous Geneva Auto Show, the Stuttgart based company, Porsche, lifted the lid on their new concept car which happens to be a mid engine, two seater sports cars with hybrid and electric drive technology. It certainly looks mean, but what are the stats like? Remarkably impressive when looked at. Nought to Sixty in less than 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 198mph and it happens to be faster than the Carrera GT, as proven by successfully finishing the Nurburgring lap in less than 7 minutes 30 seconds. So, how can a car have all this power and claim to be green? The 918 Spyder has electric motors at the front and rear axles. The drive to the front wheels is purely electric via a fixed ratio. The liquid cooled lithium ion battery pack sits behind the cockpit and can be ideally charged at home or by brake regeneration. This sports car is a high revving V-8 related, 3.4 litre racing car. It produces more than 500 brake horse power with engine revs of up to 9200 rpm. Yet, it does an incredible 78mpg, driven the right way, plus the emissions level sit at just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometre. The chassis is made from CFP (Carbon fiber reinforced plastic), along with the use of a lot of magnesium and aluminium to keep the frame as light as possible. The stylish interior is designed to be driver orientated with touch screens and intuitive controls.

Vorsteiner promises that this lightweight material actually delivers superior stiffness, aerospace strength and durability compared to traditional hand laid carbon fiber composites.

Audi recently pulled the wraps off the all-new A6 and now we鈥檙e starting to learn more about the upcoming RS6. The latest report from Autobild suggests the car could be introduced as early as next year. The high-performance model is expected to be offered exclusively as a wagon but the report suggests slow wagon sales in major markets, such as China and the United States, means there鈥檚 still a chance for a sedan variant. Power will reportedly be provided by the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that resides in models such as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Lamborghini Urus. In the Audi RS6 Avant, it is expected to produce around 605 PS. If the report pans out, the car would have 45 PS more than its predecessor and this should enable the redesigned wagon to easily beat the outgoing model which can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. An RS6 Performance could follow later with an upgraded engine developing around 650 PS and 800 Nm of torque. This would be a significant increase over the current model which has 605 PS and 700 Nm of torque.

Skoda is on a roll. Its model range is expanding quickly, with the line-up now comprising eight models - an additional 10 plug-in variants are due before 2025, too. But next in line is a new baby SUV, based on the Vision X concept, due in 2019 to sit as a rival for the Citroen C3 Aircross. To give us a taste of what鈥檚 to come, we travelled to Skoda鈥檚 Czech HQ for a quick spin in the Geneva Motor Show concept car. While these opportunities offer little in the way of true driving impressions, it gives us chance to get up close and personal with the project and the team behind it. Catching up with designers Dalibor Pantucek and Dimitrios Darkoudis gives us a better understanding into the future styling direction for the brand, too. This suggests the Vision X will transition from concept car to production SUV with only a select few design tweaks. Chief exterior designer Pantucek said the rounded wheelarches will remain, despite the bigger Karoq and Kodiaq using a squarer and more angular cladding.

The Vision X鈥檚 two-tier front lighting signature is similar to that found on its SUV siblings, and is likely to be carried over wholesale. The illuminated grille will be sacrificed on production cars, not least for safety and regulatory reasons. The split taillight design should remain, however, offering an evolutionary pattern that sets it apart from other models in the Skoda range. Pantucek said: 鈥淚magine you are a father and you have three kids. So while Skoda wants to avoid any Audi-style Russian Doll styling, both Darkoudis and Pantucek expressed their desire to stay true to Skoda鈥檚 鈥楽imply Clever鈥?rationale, adding useful features throughout. 鈥淲e wanted to merge emotion and functionality,鈥?Pantucek told us. 鈥淕ood design is somewhere in between. The interior is filled with tech - from the large central touchscreen, to the fully digital dials. Skoda has already confirmed this set-up will appear on Octavia, Superb, Karoq and Kodiaq later this year, and the as yet un-named crossover should a similar system, too. The ambient lighting from the concept is likely to appear in the finished product as well, albeit simplified to ease production.

Lamborghini Urus ST-X Concept

Lamborghini Squadra Corse has taken the wraps off the new Urus ST-X concept. Created for a unique racing series that combines off-road driving with a traditional circuit, the Urus ST-X concept has an aggressive design and a matte Verde Mantis livery. Lamborghini didn鈥檛 go into too many specifics, but the racing crossover has been equipped with a ventilated carbon fiber hood, larger air intakes and 21-inch center-locking wheels with Pirelli tires. Since the crossover was designed for competition, it has been outfitted with a number of FIA-approved safety features including a steel roll cage, a fire suppression system and an FT3 fuel tank. Lamborghini Squadra Corse also worked their magic on the Urus and this led to a 25% weight reduction compared to the standard model. This suggests the concept weighs less than 1,649 kg. While the concept is significantly lighter than the standard model, it uses the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 641 hp and 850 Nm of torque.
