The Porsche Macan GTS Is A Great Way To Get To A Winter Rally

I'm one of those secondhand fans that reads the reviews and goes to the races but has never actually done more than taken a few photos of the one GT3 RS 4.0 I saw parked at a show. I've been lucky enough to spend time behind the wheel of a great number of high-performance cars, but a Porsche has always been my Carrara White Metallic whale. After some back and forth, I was given the keys to a 2017 Porsche Macan GTS. My time had come. Likewise, until recently, driving in the snow was mostly a foreign concept to me. I learned to drive while living in the South before moving to Los Angeles after college. I understand the principles and precautions on paper, but I've never really had to deal with snow the way I do now that I've moved to Michigan. In the South, mass panic ensues if anyone catches a whiff of the white stuff, with store shelves quickly emptying of milk and bread in order to stave off what's sure to be a long, cold 12 hours or so. In Michigan, snow is just there, ever white and ever present.

In the spirit of both racing and snow, I decided to go to Northern Michigan to watch Sno Drift, a semi-amatuer rally that takes place in late January. Rallys, especially amateur ones, are wonderful events to attend. Aside from the requisite sea of Subarus, the 2017 Sno Drift lineup featured a few first- and second-gen Volkswagen Golfs, a Euro-spec Mitsubishi Mirage, and even an FC Mazda RX-7. Competition is friendly and cars are mostly piecemeal assemblages of the best of what was affordable. Many aren't far off what you'd find in Mad Max. I figured a Porsche might stand out a little. The Macan GTS is the middle child in the lineup. On other Porsches, the GTS model has been considered the sweet spot, the perfect balance of cost, options, and performance. The same seems to hold true here. All Macans have a twin-turbocharged V6, this one displacing 3.0 liters.

The engine sends 360 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque through a seven-speed PDK transmission out to four black 20-spoke wheels. The staggered setup comes with 265/45R20 tires up front and massive 295/45R20s out back, perfect for driving in the snow. Or not, but at least it had been swapped to winter rubber. I somehow managed to convince my wife to join me on this endeavour. Two of her favorite things are motor racing and standing in a sub-freezing snow storm, so she was overjoyed for two days of it. Our Carrara White Metallic model was fairly bare bones, at least as far as Porsches go. This one had the optional GTS interior (separate from the GTS trim) that includes black Alcantara with Carmine red stitching and matching red seatbelts. Personally, I loved it. My wife wasn't as sold, but she's been known to be wrong before. We were staying at an Airbnb, and the evening we were set to leave I received a text from the host asking if I had all-wheel drive.

Yes, and excellent Michelin winter tires. The thought of driving the Macan on snow-covered streets was making me giddy. Because of the weather, the drive from Detroit to Flint took twice as long as it should have, though it did give me time to get familiar with the Macan's interior, infotainment, and settings. The Macan GTS has adjustable air suspension, adjustable drive modes, an off-road mode, and a fantastic little button that opens up the exhaust. Not all V6s sound good, but not all V6s are created equal. This engine, combined with PDK, is a sweetheart. Rev, pop. Rev, pop. Rev, pop. Each gear just snaps into place in milliseconds with a gentle pull of the shift paddle. Though the computer is likely more efficient than I am, if I'm driving an automatic then I'm going to use the paddles. The perfectly sized and perfectly comfortable and perfectly clean steering wheel helps matters, too.

Facelifted Audi Q7 Spied During Winter Testing

The updated version of Audi鈥檚 Q7 has been caught on camera during its winter testing programme. It appears to borrow a number of design cues from the Q8, the company鈥檚 recently-released flagship SUV. Exterior alterations to the new Q7 aren鈥檛 particularly dramatic. The front bumper has adopted the design of the larger Q8, with a shallower front grille and more defined side intakes. Also, the rear bumper now hides the exhaust tips under the body. Its LED headlights and tail-lights appear to have been borrowed from the current generation Audi Q8. As the Q7 and Q8 share the same MLB Evo platform, we expect more parts-sharing to occur between the models, with the smaller SUV borrowing the flagship鈥檚 dual 12.3-inch infotainment displays and driver convenience systems. A range of engines will likely be available, including a four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol, a six-cylinder 3.0-litre petrol and a six-cylinder 3.0-litre diesel. The BMW X5 M reinforces its presence and functionality with its upright stature, long roofline and large window surfaces. By contrast, the BMW X6 M displays the unmistakable, dynamic lines of a BMW Sports Activity Coupe through its gently curved glasshouse, sloping roofline and pronounced wedge shape. M-specific features of both models include the familiar twin-stalk exterior mirrors with integral side indicators and optional display for the lane change assistant. Another signature element of models from BMW M GmbH are the gills in the front side panels featuring chrome trim that includes a model badge and Air Breather. The rear ends of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M also differ significantly from their standard siblings, exuding a more exclusive aura and majoring on bold, sporty accents. This approach is underlined in particular by the wide rear tyres (which are a different size from the fronts), the distinctive M rear aprons painted in body colour and the hallmark M four-tailpipe exhaust. As with all cars from the BMW brand, the design of the interior prioritises intuitive, quick and error-free usability.

And M GmbH also makes its own distinctive mark here. For example, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come with a newly developed, ergonomically optimised M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, while the M gearshift lever has an equally distinctive design. The instrument cluster, M Drive menu in the information display, displays in the optional Head-Up Display and special multifunction switch with M Drive buttons on the steering wheel also fit the M template. The new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M come with an extensive range of exclusive equipment from the factory which illustrates their character as highperformance sports machines that can be used every day. Customers can also dip into a large selection of optional equipment with which to make their car even sportier, for example, or to satisfy the most exacting requirements in terms of comfort. BMW M GmbH has developed the BMW M Laptimer app for smartphones so customers can access extensive analysis of their personal driving style on the track.

With the smartphone linked up to the car, the BMW M Laptimer app can be operated using the iDrive Controller. The app records the car鈥檚 speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, the gear currently engaged, steering angle and accelerator position. This data can subsequently be used to precisely analyse the driver鈥檚 actions and reactions at the various points around the track via graphic displays on the customer鈥檚 smartphone. Another feature allows two recordings on the same track to be compared corner-bycorner. The readings used here can be either the driver鈥檚 own or data shared by other drivers via email. The list of exclusive M options includes a fully electric M multifunction seat in Merino leather. This seat variant stands out with its integral head restraint and specially formed bolsters around the seat cushion and shoulders to further improve lateral support. Active seat ventilation is available for the M multifunction seat as an option.

The new M models can be treated to yet a further upgrade in the form of Merino full-leather appointments, carbon-fibre interior trim strips and two new and exclusive M paint finishes (Long Beach Blue metallic and Donington Grey metallic). The high-performance character of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M is further emphasised by the standard Launch Control feature adapted from its application in racing cars. BMW Individual offers customers buying a new BMW X5 M or new BMW X6 M the chance to personalise and customise their car well beyond the means provided by standard specification and the options list. The BMW Individual range comprises two areas. The BMW Individual Collection brings together items of equipment selected to suit the individual model series perfectly, including exclusive paint finishes, high-quality leather appointments and interior trim strips. Also available are an Alcantara roof liner and technical features such as a cool box and additional reading lights. The BMW Individual Manufactory, meanwhile, brings particularly extravagant customer requests to life.
