2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Arrives With More Electric Range




Porsche will bring plug-in power to the 2019 Cayenne with the introduction of the new E-Hybrid variant. The SUV will combine a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 and a single electric motor to produce a total of 455 horsepower (339 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque. A 14.1 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery will give the model a 44-kilometer (27-mile) range in the generally overly optimistic NEDC test. The Cayenne E-Hybrid's electric motor alone produces 134 hp (100 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It also helps the SUV reach 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in 4.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 157 mph (253 kph). The only available drivetrain consists of an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Multiple drive modes let owners decide how the power gets to the ground, include settings for electric-only motoring or Sport Plus for using as much electrical power as necessary for the quickest acceleration.





In standard form, the Cayenne E-Hybrid comes with a 3.6 kW on-board charger and requires 7 hours and 48 minutes to refill the battery from a 230-volt connection running at 10 amps. With the optional 7.2 kW charger and a 230-volt, 32-amp source, the time drops to 2 hours and 18 minutes. Buyers will get an expanded range of standard equipment, too, that will include the Sport Chrono Package, active suspension management, and Auxiliary Cabin Conditioning. The E-Hybrid will get Porsche's InnoDrive driver assistance suite as an option. The sophisticated version of adaptive cruise control combines data from sensors and maps to adjust the gearing and use of the electric motor for upcoming corners or elevation changes. The story goes that Leo ordered the car to do practice runs for the 1973 1000 Lakes Rally in which he was to compete, and perhaps also to practice ahead of the Targa Florio. It must鈥檝e worked, because Leo still holds the all-time lap record for the Targa Florio - beating the previous record by 90 seconds. When specifying this car, Leo ordered it with larger 鈥楽T鈥?style wheel arches to accommodate wider wheels and tires. In the years since it passed from Leo鈥檚 ownership, the car has belonged to a small number of enthusiasts, and it鈥檚 now due to roll across the auction block with RM Sotheby鈥檚 on the 12th of May in Monaco. Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid (2019)




The new Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is now better suited than ever to driving requirements. Its control system also has a range of different driving modes at its disposal for this purpose. The emphasis is on performance, highlighted by the fact that the Sport Chrono Package is fitted as standard. The driver can toggle between the four modes E-Power, Hybrid Auto, Sport and Sport Plus using the mode switch on the steering wheel. Pressing the Sport Response Button in the middle of the mode switch ramps up the car's responsiveness for 20 seconds, ensuring an even more enhanced performance - for spontaneous overtaking, for example. E-Hold and E-Charge modes are also available. These can be activated via the Porsche Communication Management (PCM). The central console can also be used to activate the Individual driving mode for a custom configuration defined by the drivers themselves. The Cayenne E-Hybrid always starts in E-Power mode.





This prioritises the electric driving experience. Accordingly, the electric engine and entire high voltage system provide the maximum performance of 100 kW (136 hp) and 400 Nm. The driver can adjust the interplay between the electric and combustion engines using a pressure point in the accelerator pedal produced by the control system. Up until this pressure point, the SUV runs purely on electricity. When the driver deliberately surpasses the pressure point, the combustion engine kicks in and provides the system's full drive potential. The new smart Hybrid Auto mode enables the most efficient operation of the Cayenne E-Hybrid in city and intercity traffic. For the ideal combination of electric and combustion engines, the drive control calculates the optimum operating strategy based on driving profile, charge status, topology and speed information. Depending on these conditions, the system selects electric-only driving for situations where it makes most sense in terms of overall efficiency. When a destination is actively programmed into the navigation system, distance from the destination is also taken into account. Depending on the distance yet to be covered, the battery will charge efficiently at higher speeds by shifting the load point.





The driver can manually set the hybrid drive's operating mode using the PCM's Hybrid menu. There, the E-Hold and E-Charge functions can be selected directly as an alternative to Hybrid Auto mode. While the Hybrid Auto mode strives for the most efficient electric driving to minimise consumption, E-Hold mode ensures that the battery's current charge status is deliberately maintained. This energy is then available at a later stage for electric driving or boosting. In the E-Charge mode, the battery is charged while driving using the combustion engine. By shifting the load point, the driver is able to increase the electric range in advance in order to use it in a specific way at a later stage, for example, in an urban environment. The efficiency-focused E-Power and Hybrid Auto modes are only one side of the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid. The driver can experience the other side at the touch of a button in the performance-focused Sport and Sport Plus modes, thanks to the Sport Chrono Package available as standard. The Sport mode offers the classic features of a Porsche car for speedy journeys on roads and motorways.





The drive and chassis switch to a sporty setting. The battery's charge status is kept to a minimum level required to provide sufficient boost potential for sports driving at any time. In Sport Plus, the focus is on maximum sports performance. The drive and chassis are in a performance setting. In the Cayenne E-Hybrid, the Sport Plus also differs from the Sport mode in that the battery charges faster. This enables more frequent boosting for longer. The Cayenne E-Hybrid is a parallel hybrid in which the electric and combustion engines both directly impact the drive train. A new, performance-focused V6 engine with 3.0 litre cylinder capacity and turbocharging acts as a combustion engine. This engine is combined with a new permanent-magnet synchronous motor. Based on the Porsche 918 Spyder, the electric engine has been converted from an internal rotor to an external rotor architecture.

2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid




The 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid doesn't boast about its plug-in hybrid, eco-friendly credentials. The less powerful charger feeds a depleted battery in about 7.8 hours using a 10-amp, Level 2 charger.





Find a 32-amp Level 2 connection and the 7.2-kw charger slices that time to just 2.3 hours. For well-heeled crossover SUV shoppers in Europe, the Cayenne E-Hybrid provides proper town-and-gown experiences. Its 27 miles of electric-only range from a full battery can be saved using an E-Hold mode for urban use in emissions-free zones. An E-Power mode keeps the vehicle in electric-only mode. Beyond the usual Sport and Sport Plus drive modes (which will keep the engine on at all times), there are four more hybrid-specific drive modes: E-Power, Hybrid Auto, E-Hold and E-Charge. E-Power keeps the car driving on electric power as long as possible, while Hybrid Auto allows the vehicle to choose its own driving mode to maximize efficiency. E-Hold will maintain the level of battery charge constant, so if, for example, the driver knows they have some city driving coming up on the route, they can save the electric range for that portion of the journey. E-Charge runs the gasoline engine at a higher rate to add charge back into the battery. The Cayenne E-Hybrid will also introduce a few all-new features to the Cayenne line, including massaging seats, a heated windshield and a head-up display. 2019 Porsche Cayenne S, E-Hybrid And Turbo First Drive: Something For Everyone

Comfort and handling are mutually inclusive - regardless of the trim, a Montreal-Toronto road trip with a stop-over at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park for a lapping session is more than possible when equipped as such. Aboard, the Cayenne caters to all needs as well. The centrally-mounted 12.3-inch screen is the center-piece of what is a functional and attractive dashboard. Porsche has thought of everything where space, comfort and utility are concerned. Attention to detail and craftsmanship are second to none, unsurprisingly. Now that the formalities are out of the way, let鈥檚 get going.





Let鈥檚 begin with the one I loved and despised the most at once. 91,700 and relies on a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 coupled to an electric motor that is fed by a 14 kWh battery. The twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6 produces 434-horsepower and 406-lb.-ft. of torque from 1,800 rpm. This one shoots forward to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds but does not feels as fast as the E-Hybrid. Even so, the S merges onto the Autobahn with considerable force. The standard 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission is very present at all times - its mechanical involvement is somehow reassuring. Sure, the other Cayennes are quick but my drive partner and I were both flabbergasted when stomped hard on the throttle the first time. 139,700 and is frighteningly fast. The twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 belches out 514-horsepower and a tizzy-inducing 568 lb.-ft. 1,960 rpm. When the power kicks in no matter the drive mode, the rear end squats and the 100 km/h mark arrives in only 3.9 seconds (with the included Sport Chrono Package, 4.1 without). Poking around with the drive modes renders the 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic almost psychic as any of provocation on the go pedal sends the truck into orbit. While the power is addictive, the tester鈥檚 included massive 415mm front discs with gargantuan 10-piston callipers are sublime. Brake pedal reaction is subliminal and the stopping power! 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid: Lean, Green, Pluggable Machine




Electrification returns to the latest generation of Porsche鈥檚 mid-size SUV with the debut of the 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid, due early next year to replace the current Cayenne S E-Hybrid. Despite the loss of an S from its name, the 2019 edition actually is more powerful than its predecessor. Standard equipment supporting the Cayenne E-Hybrid鈥檚 performance mission includes adaptive dampers (Porsche鈥檚 Active Suspension Management, a.k.a. Sport Chrono package, which brings multiple driving modes that have been adapted here for the gasoline/electric powertrain. Porsche says that plug-in charging takes as little as 2.3 hours on a 240-volt, 32-amp connection when equipped with the optional 7.2-kW onboard charger. Charging using the standard 3.6-kW unit and a 240-volt connection with 10 amps takes roughly three times as long. The battery pack itself lives under the Cayenne鈥檚 cargo floor and is dimensionally identical to the prior Cayenne S E-Hybrid鈥檚 pack while offering about 30 percent more energy capacity.





Styling differences between the standard Cayenne and the Cayenne E-Hybrid are minimal, with the gasoline/electric model most notably distinguished by its bright-green brake calipers and badges outlined in the same eye-searing hue. Green accents also find their way into the cabin on the needles of the E-Hybrid鈥檚 tachometer and Sport Chrono dial. E-Hybrid-specific displays in the gauge cluster and center screen inform the operator of the battery pack鈥檚 state of charge and rate of depletion. The 2019 E-Hybrid is the first Cayenne to offer Porsche鈥檚 new InnoDrive technology and an available head-up display. InnoDrive employs the GPS system to predict road conditions up to 1.8 miles ahead of the vehicle. Upcoming gradients, turns, and more can be predicted, allowing the vehicle to choose, among other parameters, the proper gear ratio and electric/gas power split for the situation ahead. The newly available head-up display is a first for Porsche and can project vehicle speed, engine speed, navigation directions, and more onto the windshield. Both InnoDrive and the head-up display are expected to spread to other Cayenne models. 80,950 S E-Hybrid model. While its combination of performance and electric efficiency is an enticing option, we鈥檙e eager to see the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid that鈥檚 all but certain to follow. If the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is anything to go by, we can expect such a Cayenne to pack a whopping 680 horsepower from the combination of its twin-turbo V-8 and electric motor. 150,000 when that model arrives.

E-Hold mode ensures the current battery charge level is maintained鈥攗seful if you know you're driving into a city where pure EV running is required.





E-Charge mode asks the internal combustion engine to produce slightly more power than is needed to propel the vehicle and directs the excess to recharging the battery. It works: 35 miles of 80 mph cruising in E-Charge mode on a French autoroute during our test drive pumped 15 miles of range back into our Cayenne E-Hybrid's depleted battery. Sport and Sport Plus are the fun modes. In Sport mode the Porsche not only stiffens its sinews and sharpens its responses, the battery's charge is also kept to the minimum level needed to provide a power and torque boost on demand. Sport Plus takes everything up a notch and increases the rate at which the battery is charged to allow longer periods of e-motor boost, more often. In both modes, the internal combustion engine remains in continuous operation. Hybrid haters might dismiss the Cayenne E-Hybrid as the least sporty Porsche you can buy. It's not鈥攖he entry-level Cayenne, powered by the 335 hp V-6 engine, is slower to 60 mph and has a lower top speed. In Sport Plus mode the E-Hybrid can confidently hustle down the road at a pace that will leave most regular SUVs in a welter of thrashing engines, squealing tires, and smelly brakes. Left to its own devices, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid delivers a strong combination of performance and efficiency. But it also allows drivers to switch the emphasis between the two, and not just in a purely binary fashion; there are subtle layers of functionality and capability to explore. Instead, Porsche designates the crossover SUV as an ambassador to its E-Performance initiative -- it鈥檚 a performance vehicle. Mash the throttle in Sport Plus mode and the combined electric/combustion powertrain blasts the Cayenne to 60 mph in just over 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 157 mph. The 5,000-pound Porsche defies physics with tenacious cornering ability (thanks, in part, to available 22-inch wheels -- a first for the automaker) and pedal-feel aside, stops surprisingly drama-free with standard multi-piston brakes. While no owner will ever take the E-Hybrid to a racing circuit, based on its driving dynamics, it鈥檚 not entirely implausible. For those times when drivers want to reduce their workload, Porsche will offer its InnoDrive advanced adaptive cruise control on the E-Hybrid. In addition to the common velocity and lane-keep capabilities, the InnoDrive system combines onboard map data and traffic telemetry to proactively read road conditions and optimize the powertrain -- improving efficiency. It鈥檚 another leap towards future autonomy. In terms of replenishing the battery, the E-Hybrid offers a quick option. With a 32-amp connection and the optional 7.2 kW onboard charger, a fully depleted battery may be brought back to a full charge in just 2.3 hours. With a 10-amp connection, and the standard 3.6 kW onboard charger, the same charge takes 7.8 hours -- overnight. It鈥檚 a challenge to fault the 3rd-generation Cayenne E-Hybrid. The German engineers have seamlessly integrated hybrid technology into a high-performance vehicle -- it pleases both those seeking efficiency, and those seeking driving fun. This premium SUV is genuinely the best of both worlds.
