New Volkswagen Golf Match Edition Announced




Ahead of the all-new Golf鈥檚 release next year, Volkswagen has announced a run-out edition for the current generation hatch called the Match. The model replaces the Golf SE and SE Nav editions, adding more standard equipment for a reduced cost. Prices start at 拢20,545, and deliveries are expected to commence next month. The VW Golf Match receives the standard equipment from the SE and SE Nav trim levels, including an eight-inch touchscreen display with DAB radio and sat-nav, adaptive cruise control, Apple Car-Play and Android Auto. In addition, the Match will come with new 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps and rear privacy glass. The Golf Match will be offered in two body-styles: hatchback (拢20,545) and estate (拢22,420). If you want something even more practical the Golf SV MPV is also available as a Match edition (拢22,780). The current range of Golf engines will be available in the Match, starting with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol and climbing to a 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel. The range-topping Golf SV will also be available with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel. All engines will be available with either a six-speed manual, or seven-speed automatic gearbox with the exception of the 2.0-litre diesel in the SV, which is only fitted with a seven-speed DSG. On average, the DSG auto costs around 拢2,000 more than the manual across the range. Elsewhere, Volkswagen has also updated the Golf GTI Performance and R models with standard fit keyless-entry, rear-view camera and lane-assist. It鈥檚 the Korean manufacturers first effort at a performance car and the Los Angeles-based custom shop has made some changes to the five-door liftback. From the only picture that is available, the ride has been lowered significantly and the exhausts have been given a touch up. Further examples of the juiced up Stinger include 21-inch forged wheels, wider flares, a rear diffuser and a carbon fibre aerodynamic kit. The West Coast Customs Stinger will be pitched alongside two other custom Kia鈥檚 at the Las Vegas exhibit. The first example is the LC Inspiration Series, which is influenced by the Black Panther comic book character in terms of performance and sophistication. A bespoke white interior is fitted to the Inspiration Series LC 500, which features a unique limited edition collection of barware courtesy of Barneys. The exterior boasts 21-inch forged alloy wheels and Lexus鈥?special edition Structual Blue paint. The LC 500 Inspiration Series is limited to just 100 examples. A less subtle 鈥楤lack Panther Inspired鈥?LC 500 will be pitted alongside the classy Inspiration Series model. Amidst the two-tone black and blue paint scheme, the underbody glows in a vibrant blue light and the bonnet is embroidered with the Black Panther emblem. Ten-spoke wheels and painted claws on the wing mirrors further compliment this special edition LC that鈥檚 not available for purchase, therefore it鈥檚 unlikely you鈥檒l ever see one in public. Mercedes-Benz keeps expanding its most compact model line - and this is the latest. It鈥檚 the new A-Class sedan, and it鈥檚 running full-speed ahead to the North American market. Previously revealed in long-wheelbase form for the Chinese market and as a hatchback for Europe, the new standard-wheelbase A-Class sedan sits alongside the CLA four-door coupe and underneath the larger C-Class sedan. It鈥檚 the Silver Star automaker鈥檚 rival to the Audi A3 that was similarly be-trunked with US customers in mind, and boasts a rather slippery shape to cheat the wind of its aerodynamic drag. At 4,549 mm long and riding on a 2,729-mm wheelbase, the standard-wheelbase model is 60 mm shorter than the version being made in China - but it still packs everything that Daimler could throw at it. Powertrain options are market-dependent. In the US, the sedan will come in A220 guise with a 2.0-liter turbo four producing 188 hp and 300 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and available in either front- or all-wheel drive. Elsewhere it鈥檒l be offered as the A200 with 163 hp and 250 Nm or the A180d with 116 hp and 260 Nm. It鈥檒l also be produced in different locations for different markets. The North American version will be built at the COMPAS plant that Daimler built together with the Renault-Nissan Alliance in Aguascalientes, Mexico. European examples will be made alongside the hatchback in Rastatt, Germany. And the long-wheelbase version for China is being built by joint venture with BAIC in Beijing. Following its world premiere today in Brooklyn, we鈥檙e told to expect the first examples to start showing up in US showrooms later this year.

Question: What happens when the engineers at BMW have a tug-of-war with a 6 Series coupe in the middle? Answer: The car is stretched 4.4 inches, adds two doors and becomes the 6 Series Gran Coupe! Filling a niche created by Mercedes with their CLS four-door coupe and recently joined by Audi with their gorgeous A7, BMW has unveiled their entry with the Gran Coupe. Adding a bit over 4 inches and two extra doors to the 6 Series works surprisingly well from an aesthetic standpoint. The 6er Gran Coupe is one nice looking sedan鈥r鈥oupe. BMW refers to the look as 鈥渁thletic elegance鈥? The 2013 640i Gran Coupe will be the first iteration to market in the early summer of 2012 with BMW鈥檚 familiar turbocharged inline 6 cylinder engine. Late summer will see the arrival of the 650i Gran Coupe and a turbocharged V8 motor. An all-wheel drive 650i xDrive will be available at this time as well. An 8-speed Sport Automatic Transmission will be standard in all models providing excellent sporting characteristics as well as aiding fuel efficiency. The cosseting interior will be familiar to anyone with time in the current 6 Series, as the layout is essentially unchanged. Excellent fit-and-finish and a wide variety of color combinations are available, including BMW鈥檚 Individual program. The techno-geek will be in heaven as well, as the latest gadgetry is in attendance, including BMW鈥檚 new ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems and mobility services. This is an excellent environment in which to pass the miles in appropriate luxury and technology. Production will take place at BMW鈥檚 largest plant in Dingolfing, Germany along with the other 6 Series models and also the 7 Series and 5 Series. Pricing has yet to be announced, but figure it to come in a notch above the current 6 Series Coupe models.

Volkswagen Group Diesel Scrappage Schemes Announced




The Volkswagen Group has unveiled UK scrappage schemes for all of its mass-market brands, designed to get customers into newer, less polluting cars and out of older cars from the Euro 1-4 classifications. The schemes cover the Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brands, as well as Audi, Seat and Skoda. Larger discounts for the brand鈥檚 electrified models can also be combined with the Government鈥檚 grant for low-emission vehicles. A 拢5500 scrappage scheme discount combined with the Government鈥檚 拢4500 OLEV grant can result in a total saving of 拢10,000 on an e-Golf. Adding in the 拢2500 Government grant for plug-in hybrids, the Golf GTE can have 拢7500 off and the Passat GTE 拢8500 off. Any car in the VW range, aside from the Touareg, is eligible for discount, regardless of whether it鈥檚 petrol or diesel-powered, hybrid or fully electric. VW says the scheme is being introduced to encourage the uptake of lower-emission vehicles, including hybrids and full electric cars.





Audi's scrappage scheme offers between 拢2000 and 拢8000 off its range - the smallest 拢2000 saving applied to the Q2 and the largest 拢8000 saving offered on its Q7 e-tron plug-in hybrid. The A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid has a 拢5000 discount applied, which combined with the Government's grant for low emission vehicles, is boosted to 拢7500. The new A8, R8 and sporting RS cars are not included in the scheme. Discounts of between 拢1500 and 拢4000 are available on the Skoda range, although the Kodiaq is not included in the offer. A similar strategy is offered by Seat, with the smallest 拢1500 discount applied to the Mii, and 拢3500 discount applied to the Leon; the Ateca is not included. Skoda's largest 拢4000 saving is for the Superb. Across all five scrappage schemes, cars of any brand can be traded in, although they must be diesel models and must have been registered before 2010 with pre-Euro 5 emissions classification. The car must have been kept by the owner for at least six months. The traded-in car will be scrapped under the scheme and no cars will be sold on. Other brands have pledged that valuable cars may not be scrapped and, in some schemes, Euro 4 cars are sold on.





The virtual CD comprises a hard drive which can store the equivalent of up to 10 Audio CDs identifiable using Gracenote. Three stunning new colours are added to the Freelander range, Aintree Green, Havana and Mauritius Blue, whilst an additional all new 17-inch alloy wheel design becomes available as an option at entry-level. Exteriors gain a number of new integrated design features resulting in a co-ordinated and premium appearance. Boasting the latest in Xenon LED technology, the front and rear lamps have been revamped giving the Freelander 2 a sportier yet purposeful new look, set off with a new signature graphic in the front running lights. The grille and fog lamp bezels now sport a bright finish and there are paint detailing changes to the front grille surround, insert bars and fender vent to harmonise the different elements. With this generation of Freelander 2, models are simply differentiated by trim level and not by powertrain specification. Entry level to the range is the Freelander S with cloth seats as standard.





Meridian sound system. The Dynamic version based on the SE, has gloss black fender vents and grille bars with black grille surround, complemented on the interior with three colourway choices of sport-themed electric leather seats. Top of the range is the HSE with a grained leather and wood interior as standard. There's the option of 19-inch Diamond Turned wheels and Grand Black Lacquer finisher and also Windsor leather seats with premium carpet mats for that extra special touch. The new 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine joins the Freelander 2 line-up, reducing CO2 emissions by 14 percent compared to the outgoing Si6 engine. Powering the Freelander 2 GTDi, the new direct injection, turbocharged Si4 engine now delivers 240PS and an increase of seven percent on torque to 340Nm, providing a broader spread of torque for relaxed cruising and strong low-speed response. The all-aluminium engine is a full 40kg lighter than the previous six-cylinder and returns a competitive 224g/km CO2 while meeting the stringent EU5 emissions regulations. The Si4 GTDi first appeared in the Range Rover Evoque and is packed with advanced technical features including high pressure direct injection and variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust.

New 394bhp Range Rover Sport HST Special Edition Announced




Jaguar Land Rover had pulled the wraps off a special edition Range Rover Sport HST. The new model comes with an all-new 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six mild-hybrid engine, as well as a range of exclusive interior and exterior trim. On sale now, the HST is priced from 拢81,250. The 3.0-litre straight-six turbo engine, which generates 394bhp and 550Nm of torque, is assisted by an electrically-driven compressor via a 48V mild-hybrid system. Thanks to the mild hybrid system, Jaguar Land Rover claims the Sport HST can deliver economy figures of 30.5mpg and emissions ratings of 213g/km of CO2. The system can also recover energy using regenerative braking and store it in the battery for later use by the electric motor, such as when pulling away from a standing start. The new powertrain is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system. Like the standard Range Rover Sport, the HST comes with adjustable air springs, active dampers and Land Rover鈥檚 鈥淭errain Response 2鈥?system, which 鈥渞eads鈥?the terrain being driven across and adjusts the chassis and drivetrain accordingly. Outside, the special edition Range Rover Sport gets one of two alloy wheel designs, a choice of paint colours, red brake calipers, bespoke badging and carbon fibre trim for the bonnet, front grille, side vents and tailgate. The interior of the HST is treated to a set of 16-way adjustable front seats, satin chrome shift paddles, unique badging on the fascia and a suede-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever. In addition, buyers get a range of driver assistance technology including adaptive cruise control and high speed emergency braking.





We鈥檇 do without this car鈥檚 optional 鈥榮ports shifter鈥? which has succeeded only in making the manual gearshift feel uncomfortably heavy. Despite its lack of cylinders there鈥檚 real character to the Turbo鈥檚 engine, even though Porsche has softened, smoothed and massaged the power delivery of this new direct-injection motor. You get a real sense of it filling its lungs and then there鈥檚 this terrific, dragon-like roar as it exhales, which is quite different to any other 911 in character and delivery. In my mind the 911 Turbo has always been the supreme Jekyll and Hyde character: happy to mooch or do the motorway thing, yet uniquely visceral and hot-headed when roused. There鈥檚 no denying it鈥檚 quicker than ever as a result, but there鈥檚 now a degree of remoteness and isolation from the process of making the Turbo go quickly. The numb and slightly glassy steering doesn鈥檛 help either, for it separates you further from the action, as if to suggest the Turbo simply requires you to sit still and shut up.





There remains something undeniably awesome about this surreal, almost disdainful delivery, but it鈥檚 impossible not to conclude that after the R8 Spyder the Turbo Cabriolet feels like a supremely quick fairground ride. Swapping into the Jaguar is a huge culture shock. The auto 鈥檅ox has an intuitive sense of what gear you want, not to mention a satisfying ability to execute rev-perfect throttle-blip downshifts, so the XKR is a keen and responsive partner. Using the steering wheel paddles brings another level of control, and when used in conjunction with Sport and Dynamic modes the Jag really comes alive. Up on the challenging moorland section of the test route, the XKR鈥檚 poise pays dividends, soaking up the punishment without being deflected from its trajectory, and carrying great speed without ever feeling ragged. What鈥檚 really impressive is its ability to maintain its composure, yet also display tight body control and sweet progression. With such power and torque and only the rear wheels to transmit it to the tarmac, traction can be at a premium in the Jag if you get back on the gas early.





But far from feeling untidy, or spinning an inside wheel, the XKR (complete with electronic 鈥榙iff鈥? shifts seamlessly into the most natural oversteer. Not a big-armfuls-of-lock showboating powerslide, but a poised, balanced and exploitable stance that needs subtle correction and feels brilliant. The brakes, though unimpressive when viewed through the spokes of the 20in rims, work extremely well. There鈥檚 slightly more initial pedal travel than in the Audi or Porsche, but for road use the feel and progression are first rate. The last piece of this puzzle is the California. A softcore sports car that moves Ferrari into previously uncharted territory, it is a real departure for the Maranello brand, and consequently very hard to pigeonhole. With a high-revving, 453bhp, 358lb ft, naturally aspirated V8, it is the least potent car here. The California鈥檚 exterior is bulky and rather awkwardly proportioned, but the interior is a real event. Pale cream might not be the most practical colour, but there鈥檚 no denying that the soft leather, strikingly designed instruments and adventurous cockpit architecture make it a special place to sit.





V8 starts with a flat-plane blare much like that of a 430 or 458, while a stab of the throttle reveals razor response. The steering is light and quick-witted, as is the modern tradition at Maranello, and this is matched to an equally keen front end. An array of rim-mounted shift-lights completes the picture. At low speeds the California delivers on Ferrari鈥檚 promise of a supple, less demanding open-air GT, and on gently curving sections of the A5 it flows with an easy, relaxed style. There鈥檚 not a huge amount of feedback or connection through the steering wheel, but you simply learn to trust in the grip from the P Zeros and soon settle into the Cali鈥檚 refreshing take on Ferrari motoring. There鈥檚 a surprising amount of body roll though, and as our speed increases there鈥檚 a growing sense that the rear end in particular is under-damped. This lack of body control manifests itself in other ways, most obviously through compressions, when assorted bits of underfloor aerodynamic addenda noisily grind themselves into plasticky swarf on the coarse Welsh tarmac. That none of the other cars skimmed the road shows the softness of the Cali鈥檚 chassis set-up.

Limited-run BMW M5 Edition 35 Years Announced




The BMW M5 celebrates its 35th anniversary this year so, to mark the occasion, the German brand has launched a special edition variant called the M5 Edition 35 Years. Production will be limited to 350 units when it reaches the global marketplace in July this year. Exterior styling revisions for the new model are restrained, being limited to a unique matte-metallic grey paint finish and a fresh set of 20-inch alloy wheels. The special edition M5鈥檚 brake calipers are also painted black, although buyers can spec the firm鈥檚 carbon ceramic brake package and gold calipers as an optional extra. Inside, the BMW鈥檚 latest limited edition M5 gets reupholstered sports seats finished in black and beige, a unique set of tread plates inscribed with the 鈥淢5 Edition 35 Years鈥?badge and a laser-engraved numbered plaque for the cup-holder cover. BMW鈥檚 35th anniversary M5 is powered by the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine as the M5 Competition.





The performance-focused newcomers look similar to the entry-level sports cars on which they鈥檙e based, but are set apart by a few key design tweaks. The Cayman GT4 gets a more aggressive front and rear bumper design than that of the previous-generation model. There鈥檚 also a small wing above the boot lid and a pair of exhausts that emerge from the diffuser at the bottom of the rear bumper. The Boxster Spyder gets a similar treatment, including the addition of more angular bumpers and a twin-exit exhaust system. However, as a drop-top, the Boxster Spyder鈥檚 engine cover extends from the back of the cabin to the small ducktail-esque wing. The roof is fastened in place manually and can be stored under the front bonnet when not in use. Both models are powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engine, as opposed to the turbocharged 2.0-litre flat-four motors that feature in the base-spec Cayman and Boxster. On paper, the engine looks identical to the motor that powers the hardcore 991-generation 911 GT3 RS. Instead, the engine that powers the track-honed 718 cars is a larger, naturally aspirated version of the turbo flat-six found in standard 911 Carrera models. The engine in the new models produces 414bhp and 310lb ft of torque, revving all the way to 8,000rpm, notes Autocar. Power is sent to the rear-wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, to achieve a zero to 62mph time of 4.4 seconds in both models. Top speed comes in at 188mph on the Cayman GT4, and 187mph on the Boxster Spyder.
