2019 Audi RS 3 Sportback [render]

Audi will launch an all-new A3 Sportback in 2019, and this model鈥檚 range will include an S variant and an RS variant. The third generation Audi A3 hatchback was available in 3-door and 5-door (Sportback), and its RS variant was exclusive to the 5-door (Sportback) version. Audi stopped producing the 3-door version last year citing a significant decline in demand. The next-gen Audi RS 3 Sportback rendering borrows cues from the latest Audi A1 Sportback and Audi Q3. It features a more angular hexagonal Singleframe inspired by that of the A1 Sportback, sharper, wedge-shaped headlamps with LED DRLs in a pattern reminiscent of the Q3, reshaped side air vents and revised lower air intake. The current Audi RS 3 Sportback employs the 2.5-litre TFSI turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine that produces 400 PS and 480 Nm of torque. The 7-speed S tronic DCT and the quattro permanent AWD system work together to send power to the wheels. Audi claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 280 km/h. The next-gen Audi RS 3 Sportback is said to get an uprated version of the 2.5-litre TFSI engine, but that鈥檚 about what is known of this car.

995 destination and delivery charge. 600 less than the starting price of the current CLA, which will soon be replaced by a new model. 32,500, buyers can enjoy this base model with the advanced MBUX multimedia system which premiered last year. This new system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 7.0-inch touchscreen multimedia display. The A 220 also comes standard with a Panorama roof, 17-inch wheels, and LED headlights and taillights. The second A-Class Sedan model bound for U.S. A 220 4MATIC. As the name implies, this variant is virtually identical to the A 220 but incorporates an all-wheel drive system. Both the A 220 and A 220 4MATIC models come with safety features like Active Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist, and adaptive braking technology that includes a Hill Start Assist and HOLD function. Active Distance Assist Distronic with Route-Based Speed Adaptation, Active Steering Assist, and other driver assistance technologies are optional extras. According to some reports, the U.S. 鈥檛 receive any A-Class hatchback models but could get future A35 AMG and A45 AMG Sedan models. 32,500 in the U.S. BMW doesn鈥檛 offer a direct rival (yet) to these two.

From its roots as a provider of graphics processing power for video games, Nvidia has risen to become one of the most important Silicon Valley companies developing technology for self-driving vehicles. This was underscored recently when the company announced further collaborations with two major OEMs鈥擵olvo and Volkswagen鈥攁nd top global automotive supplier ZF. Together, the announcements signal that automakers are using Nvidia鈥檚 technology for a broad range of autonomous systems, some of which are tilting from research-and-development projects into firm production plans. Chief among them: Volvo will use Nvidia鈥檚 Drive PX computing platform, pictured above, to develop advanced software and artificial-intelligence applications for autonomous vehicles. The announcements come at a time when competitors such as Intel are investing billions in self-driving technology and the race to provide chips, platforms, and artificial intelligence is ramping up. Tesla Motors was the first to use the Drive PX in production vehicles, and Nvidia has a long-standing relationship with Audi.

More recently, it has inked deals with Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and global supplier Bosch. 鈥淥n the platform side, Nvidia is clearly dominating in the development and early-implementation phases of autonomous vehicles based on the announcements that have come so far,鈥?says Mike Ramsey, research director at Gartner, a global technology consulting company. At Volvo, Nvidia will be developing both hardware and software while working with the Swedish automaker鈥檚 top supplier, Autoliv, as well as Zenuity, a new subsidiary of both companies formed earlier this year to focus on software development. Some of the work will remain proprietary to Volvo, while in some cases, Autoliv will be free to market products to other automakers. 鈥淭his is significant, because a lot of the development work we鈥檙e doing can be leveraged by other automakers,鈥?said Danny Shapiro, senior director of Nvidia鈥檚 automotive business unit. Look no further than ZF, which also announced a deal with German lighting and sensor component supplier Hella. The companies plan to work together on camera and radar ventures that could help OEMs meet upcoming European New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) standards being developed for the mass deployment of semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles.

Nvidia is now a piece of that puzzle. Drive PX will underpin the efforts of ZF and Hella to create artificial-intelligence software that optimizes camera and radar data for autonomous or semi-autonomous functions. Stefan Sommer, CEO of ZF Group, says perfecting the combination of that artificial-intelligence information with mechanical systems is vital. 鈥淲e need to be a systems supplier, and we need to understand the whole system to understand the functionalities of the future and see business models that we can sell with software solutions,鈥?Sommer said. With Volkswagen, the fruits of Nvidia鈥檚 collaboration are a bit further down the road. The two companies are working at VW鈥檚 Silicon Valley Data Lab to explore how vehicular information stored in data centers can be gleaned for insights, such as how traffic flow can be improved in particular cities. They鈥檙e using artificial intelligence in data centers instead of in the cars themselves, but in many ways, Nvidia鈥檚 Shapiro said, that鈥檚 just as important.

The 718 was actually the least efficient car on test, but even its result of 31.8mpg was impressive. But the Alpine again showed why a lower weight can be a benefit; it managed 33.6mpg, which equates to annual fuel bills of 拢1,958. Expect that cost to rise the more you explore the performance, though. In Pure trim the A110 is fabulous. Everything stems from its light weight, including efficiency and low running costs. Despite its modest power output, performance is great and the gearbox isn鈥檛 a hindrance, despite it being the weakest point. This car isn鈥檛 that practical, but the chassis is so sweet and the set-up so totally rewarding that it just edges ahead here, despite flaws in other areas. It nails what a small sports car should offer. The 718 was so close to beating the A110 again, not least thanks to its brilliant manual gearbox and incredibly capable chassis. The engineering has true depth that鈥檚 felt through the steering and damping, but it鈥檚 the engine that still grates, even if the rest of the package is dynamically brilliant. Items such as the infotainment are also showing their age, but make no mistake, this standard 718 Cayman is still a fantastic sports car. Updates to the TT S aren鈥檛 extensive enough to elevate it from third place against incredibly tough competition. There鈥檚 no denying its accessible, storming all-weather performance, while the tech, cabin and efficiency are all strong, too. With two small back seats, it鈥檚 also the most practical model. But these cars are about thrills and involvement, and the TT doesn鈥檛 deliver the highs of its extremely talented rivals here. Is it worth waiting for this model? It might be pricier, but the Toyota Supra promises huge performance from its straight six (0-62mph in 4.3 seconds) and a driving experience with poise and balance that should rival our test trio. It鈥檒l be usable, too.

New Audi S7 Sportback 2019 Review

If you don鈥檛 need the space and practicality offered by the latest Audi S6 then fear not, Audi has your back. With the same V6 mild-hybrid diesel, this S7 does everything its sibling does, with an added dose of Sportback style. Boasting an identical 344bhp and 700Nm, the Audi S7 is no faster than the S6. Despite is sleeker body and coupe looks, it isn鈥檛 any sharper, either. In fact, the two cars feel very similar to drive. That鈥檚 no bad thing, of course. Like the estate, the S7 Sportback delivers a huge slug of torque from 2,500rpm - forging past slow-moving traffic with ease. It鈥檚 quiet, too, with the slippery shape - and our car鈥檚 double-glazed side windows - keeping wind noise to a minimum. Like the S6, our test model also featured Audi鈥檚 optional four-wheel steering. It offers a pleasing degree of agility, with natural feedback through the wheel. Grip from the quattro all-wheel-drive system is strong in all conditions, too. You might reasonably expect the sleeker S7 to offer advantages when it comes to running costs, but that swooping roofline can only do so much in a car weighing over two tonnes.

The result is a single gramme per kilometre of CO2 - not even enough to lower the S7鈥檚 Benefit in Kind rating. S7 buyers are more likely to lament the death of the old car鈥檚 petrol V8, but that鈥檚 no reason to advocate the crummy sound imposer, which pumps artificial engine noise through the car鈥檚 speakers. Luckily, it can be switched off via the digital drive mode menus; even the throaty diesel grunt is preferable to the synthesised roar. The S7鈥檚 cabin is lifted almost unchanged from the standard car, just as it is in the S6. It鈥檚 luxurious and filled to bursting with the latest tech - including the stunning twin-screen infotainment system. The kit list is identical to the S6鈥檚 in fact, with all cars coming fitted with four-zone climate control, privacy glass and lashings of premium trim. Which model you choose will depend largely on whether you need the S6鈥檚 space and practicality, then. But given how similar they feel to drive, it鈥檚 hard to recommend the pricier, more compromised S7. Audi reckons it鈥檒l cost around 拢8k more than an S6 saloon - a big price to pay for a lower roofline.

There鈥檚 only room (and seatbelts) for four people, though, which may be a hindrance at times. The modern dash is a bit daunting at first, but you soon get used to it because it鈥檚 highly intuitive. The boot is quite small at 260 litres, or 1,100 with the seats folded. You can buy a nearly new Mk1 BMW i3 for between 拢13,950 and 拢41,855 on our sister site BuyaCar. Thanks to the electric i3鈥檚 simplicity, only the brakes generally need attention, but its heating system contains long-life coolant. The i3 REx has two cooling systems (for the heater and engine) and its chain-driven engine needs an oil and filter change every two years or 12,000 miles, at a cost of 拢211. Owners who purchased a 拢239 Service Inclusive pack got three years of check-ups, but the plan could only be bought up to the first service and can鈥檛 be extended. The i3 has been recalled once so far, due to incorrectly calibrated sensors within the electric power steering system. These weren鈥檛 set up properly at the point of manufacture, so the driver was in danger of losing control when cornering. The fix only required a recalibration of the sensors. They rate it slightly lower than we do (3.7/5 compared with 3.9/5), with overall ratings skewed somewhat by two owners who have experienced lots of problems. Still, most drivers love the performance, build quality, reliability and usability.

The styling is largely borrowed from the Model 3 inside and out, just like its platform, but the higher proportions suit it well especially from the rear three-quarter view. The interior is a masterpiece of minimalism with the Model Y getting a 15-inch rectangular infotainment touchscreen perched upon a simple dash with strip of unvarnished wood breaking up the swathes of grey plastic. The panoramic glass roof adds to the natural ambiance, and the seats, made from vegan materials, are a nod to the brand鈥檚 sustainable purpose. It鈥檚 also Tardis-like; the front boot and rear, with the split seats down, enabling 1,900 litres of cargo space, according to Tesla, and the option of seating for seven. The car doesn鈥檛 require a key; instead, it connects to your smartphone for seamless entry and exit. It also talks to the Tesla Mobile app so you can autonomously summon the car, fix the temperature, track the car remotely.

New 2019 Audi E-tron Sportback

This is our first candid look at the new Audi e-Tron Sportback. The new coupe-inspired all-electric SUV looks to expand into the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe鈥檚 market, offering a zero-emissions alternative. Audi鈥檚 new e-Tron Sportback will sit on the same underpinnings as the standard e-Tron, which uses an adapted version of the Volkswagen Group鈥檚 MLB platform. The same battery pack and charging system will also feature, following the e-Tron鈥檚 brief as a long-range all-electric car. We鈥檙e expecting the same range of at least 248 miles on the WLTP cycle, as well as a sophisticated energy recuperation system and support for 150kW fast-charging. However, given the slightly more aerodynamic rear end, the e-tron Sportback could boast a little extra range. Inside, the e-Tron Sportback will receive the same setup as the conventional e-Tron SUV with twin touchscreen controls and Audi鈥檚 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster as standard. Optional extras will include wing-mounted cameras in place of conventional rear-view mirrors and kerb cameras. Practicality will take a hit over the standard e-Tron, with the Sportback鈥檚 sloping roofline encroaching on rear passenger and boot-space. The 600-litre boot capacity will probably lose around 70-litres or so, but the handy 60-litres of load space under the bonnet will be retained. We鈥檙e expecting the new e-Tron Sportback to make its debut very soon, though an appearance at the Geneva Motor Show next week would be a surprise. Like the conventional e-Tron, we anticipate that just one trim level for the Sportback will be offered in the UK from its likely launch in 2020, with an S Line and Vorsprung edition to follow later.

This is the Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic saloon, the second model to be launched under AMG鈥檚 newly-established 35 range, and a direct rival to the Audi S3 Saloon. Joining the hatchback in the range Mercedes-AMG says it鈥檚 aimed at younger buyers, combining the brand鈥檚 sportiness with more space for passengers and their luggage. The styling is familiar from A 35 hatch with the biggest changes occurring at the rear, where a boot lip spoiler, rear diffuser and two large tailpipes have been added. It rides on 18-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels. It鈥檚 powered by a 302bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine that develops 400Nm of torque. Like its hatchback cousin, the entry-level AMG can hit 155mph and 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds. That makes the A 35 Saloon two seconds quicker from 0-62mph than the Audi S3 Saloon. Power is delivered through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to Merc鈥檚 4Matic four-wheel drive system. The A 35 Saloon鈥檚 front suspension comprises an aluminium wishbone with one spring strut and one tie rod, while the rear is served by a multi-link rear axle. A three-mode AMG Ride Control suspension system provides manually set and automatic adaptive adjustable dampers, an option on this model. As predicted, a high-performance braking system is carried over from the A 35 hatchback. Front 350mm and rear 330mm brake discs all come internally ventilated and perforated, which dissipate the heat under hard use. The cabin is largely unchanged from the regular A-Class hatch, but some AMG unique features such as the flat-bottom steering wheel and AMG sports seats appear. Merc鈥檚 familiar 12.3-inch dual digital displays on the dash provide access to the firm鈥檚 new MBUX infotainment system with voice control.

The A-Class is the entry-level variant in Mercedes鈥?extensive and ever-expanding model range - and the A 180 is the cheapest way to put a three-pointed star on your driveway. In SE spec, as tested here, it comes with a Renault-sourced 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine and a six-speed manual gearbox. But does that mean those unable to stretch to the more powerful and arguably more desirable A 200 AMG Line, should feel short-changed? Every new A-Class - including the basic SE - comes with twin digital displays, sat-nav, Live Traffic information and keyless go. Quality is excellent; the doors shut with that characteristic Mercedes thud, and the dash is covered in squashy plastics. The only place you鈥檒l find scratchier materials is on the very lower part of the front seats, in fact, but all the regular touchpoints feel solidly screwed together. Delve a little deeper and you鈥檒l find that leather is actually made from ARTICO man-made fabric.

But this is something Mercedes is implementing right across the range as an environmental upgrade, rather than an attempt to cut costs. Either way, it looks and feels like the real thing. Under the bonnet, you鈥檒l find a de-tuned version of the A 200鈥檚 1.3-litre petrol engine. Instead of that car鈥檚 161bhp output, the A 180 produces just 134bhp, while torque (200Nm versus 250Nm) is down, too. But linked to the six-speed manual gearbox, the cheapest A-Class never feels slow; it doesn鈥檛 launch like a hot hatch, but performance will be more than adequate for most buyers. The shift is even pretty sweet - the springy feel of old Merc manuals is gone, replaced by a pleasingly short and notchy throw. It鈥檚 even a fairly accomplished motorway cruiser. You鈥檒l need to work the box for peak performance, as it doesn鈥檛 shift down automatically like the DCT. But it鈥檒l sit quietly at a steady 70mph, with those deep-profile tyres cushioning the A鈥檚 occupants from the UK鈥檚 all-too-frequent potholes. So should you step up to the faster A 200, or indeed Merc鈥檚 high-end trims? An A 180 SE will cost you around 拢357 per month on a 36-month, 10,000-mile a year PCP deal with a 10 per cent deposit. There are tangible benefits to spending another 拢18 per month on the Sport-spec鈥檚 LED lights and two-zone climate control, of course, not to mention the aesthetic gains gifted by the 17-inch wheels. But we鈥檇 argue that another 拢27 per month (拢402/month) for the equivalent A 200 is money better spent on the A-Class鈥檚 excellent Executive Package, which adds heated front seats, Active Parking Assist and a larger 10-inch media display.

The 2019 Porsche 911 is available in a dizzying variety of configurations that range from truly quick to super fast and blindingly speedy. Interestingly, all 911s 鈥?with two spectacular exceptions 鈥?are turbocharged. That's right, even the base 911, the regular old Carrera, has two turbochargers heaving air into its horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine. And, yes, that engine is still hanging off the back of the 911 where physics says it shouldn't be, and yet Porsche's engineers make it work brilliantly anyhow. The only two non-turbocharged exceptions for 2019 are the revised 911 GT3 and GT3 RS. The GT3 has a non-turbocharged 4.0-liter flat-six that produces 500 hp, while the GT3 RS features an uprated version of that engine that produces 520 hp. They're both paired to a variety of track-focused chassis enhancements and weight-reducing body pieces. The GT3 is also available in a wingless Touring model for those wanting a more subdued body shape.

Properly equipped, the Audi Q7 can tow up to 6,600 pounds, a competitive rating for a large luxury crossover. Audi Q7 4.2 TDI. Standard safety features on the 2015 Audi Q7 include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and rear parking sensors. Front parking sensors, a rearview camera and a blind spot warning system are standard on the Premium Plus and Prestige trims. A corner-view camera system is a Prestige exclusive. Second-row side airbags are optional on all trims. In Edmunds brake testing, a Q7 3.0T equipped with all-season tires came to a stop from 60 mph in 133 feet, which is longer than expected for this class. A Q7 TDI with wider summer tires came to a stop from 60 mph in a much more respectable distance of 111 feet. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Q7 its highest rating of "Good" in its moderate-overlap frontal-offset and side-impact tests. The Q7's seat/head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts. The 2015 Q7's interior is par for the course with Audi, which means plenty of top-notch materials and a well-designed dashboard layout.

The front compartment is clearly built around the driver, creating a cockpit-like feel that's unusual in a large SUV. The MMI electronics interface boasts logical menus and crisp graphics, although we still prefer BMW's iDrive or Mercedes' COMAND for overall ease of use. The difference in quality is particularly noteworthy when you know that the MMI system in the Q7 is the smaller, older version. Other Audis have a more recently upgraded version that is larger and easier to read. As for space, adult-sized passengers will have plenty of it in the Q7's first two rows, and they'll appreciate that the second-row seats both slide and recline to enhance long-haul comfort. The third row, however, is suitable only for kids, which is disappointing in this class. Cargo space likewise lags behind that of the competition, with only 72.5 cubic feet of space with the second and third rows folded flat -- about the same as a Honda CR-V.

When both rear seating rows are in use, the rear cargo area measures a paltry 10.9 cubic feet. The base 3.0T engine serves up respectable passing power in the 2015 Audi Q7, while the more powerful S line version delivers extra punch with no penalty at the gas pump. Unfortunately, the penalty is pretty stiff to begin with -- the MDX, for example, gets 5 more mpg on the highway, and it's also a few tenths quicker to 60 mph. The pick of this litter is the TDI diesel, as it's relatively fuel-efficient and has plenty of torque for most situations. The Q7 is best on the open road. It is whisper-quiet on the inside (even with the diesel engine) and has surprisingly quick reflexes that make this big crossover seem smaller than it really is. The ride quality, however, may be a bit too firm for some shoppers, in which case we recommend the Prestige trim's optional air suspension with adjustable comfort settings.
