New Lynk & Co SUV-coupe Spied Prototype Testing

A prototype SUV-coupe from Geely-owned Lynk & Co has been spied during winter testing in Germany. The styling of the prototype bears more than a passing resemblance to the firm鈥檚 first SUV, the 01; the headlight positioning and front end are largely carried over. However, from that point, the similarities end where the roofline begins to curve gently towards the subtle boot spoiler. With the rise in popularity for SUV-coupes, first seen with the BMW X4, it鈥檚 little surprise a new car maker is looking to tap into growing car markets. Sharing electrical technology, safety systems and engine options with the Volvo XC40, we expect the Lynk & Co SUV-coupe to be based on the CMA platform. That also means Volvo鈥檚 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol, which is also available as a plug-in hybrid, should be carried over to the model. Lynk & Co鈥檚 current model offering consists of three cars: the 01 SUV, 02 compact crossover and the 03 saloon. These existing models are expected to be joined by the new SUV-coupe as well as a new hatchback and a larger SUV, based on the Volvo XC90 platform. Are you excited about the thought of another SUV-coupe?

New DS 3 Crossback E-Tense Prototype Review

Like almost all new cars due for launch this year, the DS 3 Crossback will be offered with a broad range of petrol, diesel and electrified powertrains. We first drove the PureTech 130 petrol earlier this month, but before the year is out, PSA鈥檚 premium brand will add a pure-EV version to the line-up - complete with a WLTP-rated 200-mile range. While a full road test of the forthcoming DS 3 E-Tense won鈥檛 be possible until the autumn, the French maker has already thrown us the keys to an early prototype version of its electric crossover. Using a 50kWh battery and a 100kW electric motor, the E-Tense offers performance on par with its electric rivals. Throttle response is immediate, and while it won鈥檛 pin you in your seat like a Tesla, the instant torque means it feels quicker than the 8.7-second 0-62mph sprint suggests; 0-30mph is done and dusted in just 3.3 seconds.

As mentioned, our preliminary drive was short and somewhat restricted, but the few corners we did experience showed the E-Tense to handle neatly. The batteries are mounted under the floor and the standard car鈥檚 polished dynamics appear to have been carried over intact. The steering is light, however, and while it鈥檚 perfectly direct, there鈥檚 very little feel or feedback on offer. It鈥檚 impossible to pass judgement on high-speed ride or refinement due to the nature of our first test. DS claims the all-electric Crossback will offer a WLTP range of 200 miles, which puts it ahead of the Nissan Leaf but slightly shy of the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric. DS wouldn鈥檛 reveal how long the car will take to charge from a three-pin plug, but it did confirm that an 11kW wall box reduces top-up time to just five hours. Using a public fast-charge point the DS 3 can charge to 80 per cent full in around 30 minutes (5.5 miles per minute), which is about par for the course in this segment. Inside, you鈥檇 be hard-pressed to tell the EV apart from its petrol and diesel counterparts. That鈥檚 to say it鈥檚 well built, if a little quirky in its design. Many of the car鈥檚 key functions are still hidden deep within the fiddly infotainment system, while the touch sensitive dashboard buttons are sometimes tricky to operate. Exact prices and specs will be announced nearer launch, but expect all versions to get sat-nav, climate control and 18-inch alloy wheels as standard. Thankfully, the DS 3鈥檚 interior packaging isn鈥檛 compromised by the EV鈥檚 electric gubbins. In fact, the 350-litre boot is completely unaffected, which is lucky given the petrol model鈥檚 less-than-impressive statistics in this area. Space in the rear seats is adequate, if a little off the class best.

BMW IX3 Prototype

BMW is working on plug-in hybrid and electric versions of the X3 crossover and the latter variant has just been spied by Carscoops photographers. Tthe iX3 is virtually identical to the standard model but a few subtle tweaks indicate it鈥檚 fully electric. First and foremost, there鈥檚 an electric charging port which is located on the driver鈥檚 side front fender. The crossover also eschews an exhaust system and instead has a full-width rear bumper without any cut outs. The final change isn鈥檛 very noticeable by our spy shooters say the model has a reduced ride height. This was likely changed as part of an effort to improve the X3鈥檚 aerodynamics and eke out some additional range. BMW hasn鈥檛 said much about the iX3 but the company鈥檚 e-mobility roadmap revealed the model will be introduced in 2020. It will be a fourth-generation electric vehicle like the 2019 MINI EV. Performance specifications remain unconfirmed but the model will compete with the Audi E-tron, Mercedes EQ C and Jaguar I-Pace. The latter two models will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month and have a significant head start on the iX3. While the model will be arrive after its key competitors, BMW has already announced plans to offer 25 electrified models by 2025. This figure includes 12 battery-electric models such as the iX3.

I drive. From Edmunds HQ in Santa Monica these drives range from a couple of hours to SD to up to seven hours to get to Frisco or Phoenix. Vegas is about five. Last week I had business at Google just south of San Fran and some Edmunds internal business in downtown San Diego. So I fired up our long-term 2015 Porsche Macan S and hit the road. See full article and comment. It occurred to me to see if the Macan has launch control at the perfect time. I was on a deserted road by myself. I switched Sport mode on, deactivated stability control, then stopped, wooded the brake, wooded the throttle and 鈥?lo and behold 鈥?the revs climbed unimpeded to 3,500 rpm and stopped. So I released the brake. See full article and comment. Yes, our 2015 Porsche Macan S has a heated steering wheel. You'll likely not discover it by looking for a button, however. The button to activate it is hidden behind and between the steering wheel's center spokes.

I accidentally bumped it with a finger when wheeling through a parking lot. See full article and comment. So our 2015 Porsche Macan S has been sitting in my driveway for several days now which has given me plenty of opportunities to observe the subtle merits of its design. One of my favorites is also one of the least obvious. See full article and comment. I drove our 2015 Porsche Macan S for the first time this week. The first time I tried to open the Macan's hatch I was baffled by the lack of a traditional release so I resorted to the remote release on the key fob. See full article and comment. If you're used to climbing into different sorts of cars, there's a muscle memory that develops. You expect a certain ratio of step-in height to seat height. SUV's, even smaller crossovers, have an elevated step-in height and then an elevated seat height as well. Cars have a lower step-in height and then fall into the seat. Essentially it's up and up, versus down and down.

See full article and comment. Our long-term 2015 Porsche Macan S, didn't cover many miles during the month of September. Only about 1,300. But its lifetime fuel economy continues to improve. See full article and comment. San Bernardino, California has three claims to fame. One: It is the location of the very first McDonald's. Two: It is the location of the very first Taco Bell. And three: It is my wife's hometown. San Berdoo was also my destination as I jumped in our long-term 2015 Porsche Macan S last Thursday morning. I had already punched my destination into the crossover's navigation system and had hit the freeway for what I hoped would be an uneventful 72-mile drive due east. The Porsche had other ideas. See full article and comment. I've driven plenty of Porsches with the dual clutch "PDK" transmission before. They all felt and drove great, but in the 2015 Porsche Macan S the PDK feels nearly perfect.

See full article and comment. Porsche's online configurator is one of my favorite ways to live vicariously on the Internet. Here I can happily build my perfect dream Porsche 911 with all the little options I desire (leather-upholstered air vent slats? Sure, why not!). But then I click the Summary button and see my final, real-world dollar tally. I think I've just built Larry Ellison's Porsche. But along comes the 2015 Porsche Macan. In comparison to the Porsche mainstays, it's within the realm of affordability. A bargain Porsche, you might say. See full article and comment. Finding a podcast using a car's iPod/iPhone interface is just about impossible when there isn't a dedicated podcast menu within the interface. And even if you knew exactly what those names were, it's a royal pain to rifle through hundreds of tracks or artists to find them. Sometimes podcast will be a genre, but that too is annoying. See full article and comment. Carroll is spot on in her assessment of the new 2015 Porsche Macan S. It was parked in my driveway this weekend when my neighbor walked over to check it out.

JLR Mobility Door Prototype

Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled a prototype door which can automatically open as the driver approaches or be operated by gesture control. Dubbed the mobility door prototype, Jaguar Land Rover鈥檚 new technology combines motion sensors with existing keyless entry technology to detect a driver walking towards the vehicle before automatically opening the door. The British car manufacturer says the technology will prove especially important for disabled people that use a car as their main form of transport. Additionally, it will be useful for people carrying large items as the driver that don鈥檛 have a free hand to open the door. Much like a Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover鈥檚 mobility door prototype can be closed from the inside with the press of an overhead button. To ensure doors don鈥檛 randomly open into the path of obstacles, such as lamp posts, radar sensors have been fitted. Users can also configure the door to close and lock as they walk away. Of course, automatic opening doors like this aren鈥檛 a new technology. For example, Tesla owners have been enjoying similar technology for quite some time. Nevertheless, former Royal Marine Commando and triple amputee Mark Ormrod, says the technology will be very handy for people with disabilities. Jaguar Land Rover hasn鈥檛 said when it will introduce the technology to its production vehicles.

Interior trim causes the most complaints among respondents, but reports of other issues are rare (13.9 per cent). Maintenance bills are high if you don鈥檛 have one of the pre-paid TLC packs, though. The Mk3 SEAT Leon has been available since 2012, but its age is no factor when it comes to reliability as the sporty hatch comfortably makes the top 10 most reliable used family cars on sale. It鈥檚 similar to the Mk7 Volkswagen Golf under the skin, which sits in tenth place on this list, with owners of both reporting almost the same amount of problems. The styling of the ninth-generation Honda Civic has always polarised opinion, but reaction is mostly positive when it comes to reliability. With a score of 92.60 per cent, the hatchback is the seventh most reliable used family car money can buy. On the rare occasions things do go wrong (11.3 per cent), Civic owners taking part in the survey say electrics are often to blame.

The Mk4 CR-V just edged out the Civic to claim the honour of most reliable used Honda with a Driver Power score of 92.72 per cent. Just 11.1 per cent of respondents mentioned that the family SUV had gone wrong, with electrical and gearbox issues the main problem, while reasonable dealers鈥?charges were also commended. The Skoda Yeti excelled in last year鈥檚 Driver Power reliability survey, and despite a slight drop, the quirky SUV still has much to offer. A score of 92.86 per cent sees it just creep into fourth place, while just 15.9 per cent of owners said that they have had a problem - with electrics being the biggest gripe. Toyota鈥檚 Prius continues to impress as a used choice, with reliability standing out in our 2018 Driver Power survey. The pioneering hybrid scored an impressive 93.17 per cent, suggesting there is nothing to fear from those hi-tech mechanicals. Although 20.7 per cent of owners reported a problem, the high ranking means issues are unlikely to have been major. The Mk2 Toyota Auris, which was on sale between 2012 and 2018, may not set pulses racing from a design perspective, but there is no doubting its reliability. It sits second on our list of the most reliable used family cars with a score of 94.63 per cent, which is also good enough for fourth place across all sectors, with just 6.9 per cent of owners reporting issues. The Toyota RAV4 is officially the most reliable used family car in our 2018 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey. It鈥檚 also the third Toyota on this list. In fact it鈥檚 the third Toyota in the top three, suggesting the Japanese brand is still at the forefront when it comes to reliability. Reported issues are scarce (15.4 per cent), with respondents tending to mention the brakes if they did have trouble.

New BMW M135i XDrive Prototype Review

No family hatchback line-up would be complete without a hot range topper, and this new M135i xDrive is just that car for the new BMW 1 Series. For a start, it鈥檚 not front-wheel drive. The M135i is only available with BMW鈥檚 four-wheel drive xDrive system, which can send as much as 50 per cent of the power to the rear axle. On the subject of power, there鈥檚 302bhp and 450Nm of torque from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor that鈥檚 an evolution of the motor first seen in BMW鈥檚 X2 M35i xDrive hot SUV. But compared with that engine it boasts new pistons for higher compression, stronger con rods, a new, larger twin scroll turbo and new fuel injectors. In this prototype it felt very measured and linear. That maximum torque output is delivered from 1,750rpm and sustained to 4,500rpm, so there鈥檚 strong performance low down and not much lag, while it revs out with a decent level of aggression too. However, it鈥檚 not the most characterful unit, so much so that BMW has enhanced the engine鈥檚 note with a contrived sound under load.

There鈥檚 a rorty noise and some pops on upshifts from the sports exhaust, we just wish we could hear more of this. The gearbox itself is good. An eight-speed automatic that shifts swiftly and smoothly no matter whether you鈥檙e going up or down, but it doesn鈥檛 feel as rapid as the best dual-clutch systems. It doesn鈥檛 enhance nor does it hinder the driving experience, but what about that new platform? There鈥檚 a good level of grip and the balance is benign, so you can jump in and drive it to its limit very quickly - something BMW鈥檚 engineers explicitly wanted to achieve. Even once you approach or exceed that limit the M135i feels friendly, but not all that thrilling. That鈥檚 because it pushes into understeer whereas its rear-driven ancestor wanted to indulge you in small slides. Our early drive was limited to a tight and twisty handling circuit, so we couldn鈥檛 tell much about the ride on the standard 18-inch wheels. There is a subtle degree of adjustability, but even with the clever new integrated traction control and stability system that鈥檚 design to inject more of a fun feel, we鈥檇 have liked a little more. After all, this is BMW鈥檚 calling card.

Downsized diesel engines like this can sometimes be coarse on the move, but as long as you don鈥檛 extend the 1.5 unit too far beyond 3,000rpm, it鈥檚 smooth, delivers a sustained surge of performance and isn鈥檛 too grumbly. The rest of the time it鈥檚 refined, and the motor鈥檚 diesel drone melts into the background. It鈥檚 matched by a chassis that smooths out the road relatively well, with a long wheelbase that gives a nice, lazy and languid feel to the way it deals with most bumps. But as with most cars on the EMP2 platform, harsher inputs clatter through the chassis. The small steering wheel makes it feel too keen to turn if anything, but the chassis has just enough agility to keep up. Kia has updated its Optima with a fresh look and a more efficient 1.6-litre turbodiesel, plus extra safety tech. These are all important points in this sector, so can this 拢24,260 Optima 1.6 CRDi 鈥?鈥?(our pictures show a 鈥?鈥?trim car) take victory?

Although the Kia boasts 5bhp and 20Nm more torque than the Peugeot, it鈥檚 also 175kg heavier, which is a substantial amount and enough to dull the Optima鈥檚 on-paper performance advantage. The gearbox is also more pleasant in the Optima, because the Kia鈥檚 shift action is slicker and more consistent, so with steering that feels precise enough for the size and weight of the car the Kia handles acceptably. The steering is also better judged compared with the very alert feeling you get from the small wheel in Peugeot. It doesn鈥檛 have the soft, fluid damping of the 508 on the motorway because body control is a little tauter, but then over bumps and potholes the back axle in particular doesn鈥檛 rebound as aggressively. The Optima feels better balanced front to back than the 508; it鈥檚 just bland to drive. The Insignia Grand Sport is currently our favourite car in this class.

It offers practicality and plenty of technology at an affordable price, and is surprisingly good to drive. We鈥檙e testing it here in 拢23,450 1.6 Turbo D 136 SRi Nav guise to see if it can fend of the challenge from the Peugeot. Vauxhall鈥檚 1.6-litre turbodiesel unit in 134bhp tune is a known quantity, and it鈥檚 just as strong here. The torque available combined with the car鈥檚 shorter gearing means there鈥檚 great flexibility. The Insignia showed just how much at our test track, where it accelerated from 50 to 70mph in top in 8.8 seconds - 2.4 seconds quicker than both rivals. It was also the fastest from 0-60mph with a time of 9.3 seconds, while going from 30 to 70mph through the gears the Grand Sport was the swiftest, too. On that subject, the gearshift is acceptable, but nothing more than that, really. However, the chassis is surprisingly sweet. The car rides with supple composure, tracking over bumps and rifts in the road with a relatively gentle touch. You feel the Vauxhall being jostled by larger imperfections in the road, but the wheels only thump occasionally and the body is controlled well, so it鈥檚 actually composed.
