But if you look at the cars that are actually driving themselves on roads today, just two models are miles ahead: the Lexus RX450 and the Ford Fusion, with its sibling, the Lincoln MKZ. Public records sourced from the California Department of Motor Vehicles show the Ford Fusion and the Lexus RX450h make up 80 percent of self-driving cars that are not vehicles being tested by their own manufacturers. Nationwide, the figures are harder to come by. Going by publicly available information, the Fusion and the RX450h roughly account for more than a third of all autonomous test cars in the United States. Leading the Lexus camp is Google, with the largest total of self-driving cars: 24 RX450hs and 34 of its own prototypes. Zoox, a Silicon Valley startup aiming to make a fully autonomous vehicle for ride sharing, also uses a Lexus crossover for testing.

New for 2019, the Corolla hatchback reverses traditional Corolla sedan weaknesses in a package that could change consumers鈥?opinions about the decades-strong nameplate, for better and worse. Known elsewhere as the Auris (and the replacement for the Corolla iM here), the 2019 Corolla hatchback is one of the most attractive cars in its segment. That pissed-off front styling you鈥檝e seen all over the automotive universe is realized effectively on the sharp Corolla hatch鈥攚hether you get the SE or sportier XSE trim鈥攚ith cool fangs on the lower front fascia and standard LED headlights. Around back the creased sheetmetal is interestingly shaped, except it鈥檚 not sheetmetal. The hatch is composed of a resin that allows for more complex surfacing, Toyota claims. It鈥檚 been a very long time since the Corolla could truly be called sporty, but this hatchback takes steps in that direction.

Built on Toyota鈥檚 TNGA platform and riding on a sport-tuned suspension, the 2019 Corolla hatch has moves that place it in another class of responsiveness and fun above the American-market sedan. It鈥檚 no Civic Type R, of course, nor is that the Corolla hatchback鈥檚 mission. But with 168 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, the car has just enough oomph to keep things interesting. Anyone put off by the Corolla sedan鈥檚 lethargic responses should drive the hatch. Then again, anyone who appreciates the Corolla sedan鈥檚 interior spaciousness will be put off by the Corolla hatch鈥檚 disappointingly small interior. The hatch lacks the class-above spaciousness we鈥檝e come to expect from the Civic and Elantra GT hatchbacks; passenger volume is well below that of hatchbacks from Honda, Hyundai, and Volkswagen. If you compare it to the outgoing iM, well, it鈥檚 smaller than that, too. There鈥檚 a respectable though not class-leading 18.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats, which is about even with the Volkswagen Golf but not as stuff-friendly as the Honda or Hyundai.

HatchbackLife than the primary mission of being more versatile than a sedan. The Corolla hatch drives well, with a lowered center of gravity and 60 percent more torsional rigidity than its predecessor. The steering communicates more on the XSE model, which rolls on 18-inch wheels and 225/40R18 tires compared to the base SE鈥檚 16s and 205/55R16 rubber. And although you do feel bumps, the XSE shouldn鈥檛 prove tiresome as a daily driver. Speaking of which, the updated CVT is still the better choice for commuting, but the also-available rev-matching six-speed manual can鈥攁t the push of a button鈥攕ubtly smooth out gear changes. Cool. As for that CVT, it has a physical launch gear and simulated gears for those who worry about the rubber-band feel of a CVT. Those simulated gear changes mostly stay in the background, only occasionally messing with the key benefit of CVTs: everyday smoothness. Inside, a decent amount of the 2019 Corolla hatch is covered in soft-touch surfaces, and drivers will have good front and side visibility; you can improve the view out back by folding down the rear-seat outboard headrests.

Following Volkswagen鈥檚 2015 Dieselgate scandal, Audi and Porsche were both effected also. However, this is only when driving faster, and as the GTE has that capability, it鈥檚 more evident but certainly not a problem day to day. On test the Golf sprinted from 0-60mph in 6.8 seconds, trailing the MINI by four tenths. The less powerful GTE was also slower in gear than the Countryman, although it only trailed the MINI by two tenths from 30-70mph through the gears. The DSG box shifts quickly, but it can sometimes be a bit clunky when coming to a stop. It鈥檚 not the only flaw. The firmer set-up also means the GTE suffers in terms of ride quality compared with more normal Golfs. However, it鈥檚 no worse than the MINI here, and although both these cars are on the firmer side, the damping is plusher than the Mitsubishi鈥檚, which tends to crash over imperfections. Apart from the firmer edge to the ride, the GTE is refined. There鈥檚 some road noise, but it鈥檚 no worse than in the MINI, while the engine isn鈥檛 as coarse as the Outlander鈥檚 when revved.

The engine is very quiet at idle, but wind and road noise are much more noticeable when you鈥檙e up to speed than in the VW. However, the difference gets smaller the faster you go, and on the motorway there鈥檚 not too much in it. Both competitors are good for a city car, but you鈥檒l still need to turn up the volume on the audio system to drown out the outside world at speed. The Kia rides well most of the time, and it鈥檚 smooth enough around town, but it鈥檚 not as composed as the Volkswagen. Big potholes cause more of a stir in the Picanto鈥檚 cabin, for example.

The steering isn鈥檛 quite as direct as in the up! 鈥檛 as slick, either. Still, it鈥檚 fun to use, with a light clutch and a neat, mechanical feel. It means you can make the most of the engine, which is a real highlight. This new turbocharged motor is undoubtedly the best part about the driving experience; the extra power and torque ensure this version of the Picanto is brilliant fun. It鈥檚 a little more powerful than the up! 鈥檚 a distinct difference between them; overtaking opportunities are more limited in the VW, for example, because you鈥檒l have to find a longer section of road to get past slower traffic. But the people were relentless. 911 GT3 has an even more powerful side in the form of RS and doubt filled the air whether Cayman should go for it too. On the center console, controls for suspension, throttle and steering settings are conveniently next to the gear shifter. Navigation comes standard on the M4, along with BMW's widescreen display and BMW Apps, all controlled by the iDrive interface. Track enthusiasts will rejoice over the new GoPro app, which lets drivers record and control their car-mounted GoPro camera (sold separately) directly from the iDrive interface. Although the M4 is not as practical as the four-door M3, there's adequate interior storage space, like wide door pockets that can accommodate water bottles and mugs, plus two cupholders on the center console. Rear seats are fine for average adults on shorter trips, with 33.7 inches of legroom and 36.1 inches of headroom, compared with 35.1 and 37.7 inches in the M3, respectively. Cargo space measures 11 cubic feet, one cubic foot less than the M3, which is enough to fit a couple of large suitcases with a bit of room to spare. Standard 60/40-spilt folding rear seats allow for even more carrying capacity.

Trinkerwasserwald has been promoting deciduous growth in their forests that are primarily made up of coniferous woods. Deciduous growth is believed to generate and retain an average of 800,000 more liters of water per hectare than forests composed of coniferous trees. This has been confirmed to be the case generation after generation. Porsche took it upon themselves to plant 5,000 deciduous trees in the forest associated with their community. These trees will be the first step towards rejuvenating their storm-damaged woodland areas and will eventually be capable of supplying an insurmountable amount of drinkable water for the community. Trinkerwasserwald acknowledges Porsche鈥檚 efforts as a partnership in the grand effort of promoting the idea of sustainability on a global scale. Both companies are putting in their efforts not only to do their part in alleviating our crippled environment, but to incite others to help make these necessary efforts.

Strangely my heart desired books, lots of them, some nice cloths but not too much. I had my own TV and record player. It was very important since my room was my Universe. I wore jeans, a large sweater and a cap with my hair tucked under in sign of protest to the blah looking preppy rich kids. Funny isn't it, how we label it all? I got disappointed with the way those kids acted with their riches.

Nevertheless, I have to admit that the two College years were possibly the most fun ones of my education. Not because I learned a lot. I was a gifted child so retaining information was very easy. Forgetting it later on was as easy. But, just for finally feeling free, having friends to hang out with. I let go of some of my shyness then and that feeling was more than having any kind of money. There were also my darkest years, toughest on an emotional level. My parents divorced that year. Same year as I met my first boy friend. A lot of turmoil and questioning. But we were rich for a while. We had been somewhat poor too, or what we think poor is. In Paris, we had no bathroom. But then, my parents had so many friends. They would come over. I remember the music, the dancing, the holding the furniture so it would not tip over with so much jumping up and down.

I remember the joyful embraces, the difficult parting after a real real good time. I was very young but those memories were burned into my brain. We moved, got rich supposedly but were just the four of us. There were no more parties, no more friends coming over, no more joyful long evenings. Just work, work, work and all the terrible stuff that comes with worries, fatigue and stress. So my parents divorced, and later still worked together in another pastry shop my dad had rented. Could write a book just about that period of my life. Maybe I will. In any case, one day, at age twenty one, I got a call. My parents went bankrupt. They had lost everything. My dad had mismanaged his finances and bailiffs came to pick up everything they could. They were not really bright as they massacred the large gaz oven that could have blown us all to pieces. So my parents were poor.

I felt poor as well. I was anyway, living on my own for three years, struggling to pay for University and food. My mom, tearful, handed the pastries made early that day to strangers walking on the street. One old time client rented a cab that drove back and forth delivering the goodies to different charity organisations, bless her. Another complained that the free cake was vanilla and she preferred chocolate. A TV reporter came so we could appear on sad evening news as one more casualty of recession (not the one we supposedly live now, another from which we learned nothing). I often asked myself when were really the richest, the poorest. I always great memories of my life in France, even with the common toilet. I loved the smell of the old wooden staircase. I loved my friends dearly and it took me numerous years to trust that I could have friends again.

Last year, Porsche unveiled the new 718 Boxster, borrowing from the nostalgia bin to highlight the car's new turbocharged flat-four engine. The biggest change, as with the 718 Boxster, is the introduction of two new engines. The standard 718 Cayman will come with a 2.0-liter flat-four engine, good for 300 horsepower, 280 pound-feet of torque and a 4.5-second 0-60mph time. The hotter Cayman S packs a 2.5-liter four-banger with 350 horsepower, 309 torques and a 0-60 time of 4 seconds flat. The look of the Cayman has also gone through a change. The front sports a slimmer fascia, with new headlights and enlarged air intakes. The rear's all new, with a strong accent strip marked by a large Porsche badge, as well as new taillights. The rear wheels are a half an inch wider for improved traction and upgraded brakes to make sure you stop. There are also a wealth of performance options on tap, including Porsche Torque Vectoring and the brand's adaptive suspension system. Inside, the 718 Cayman features a new upper dashboard, new air vents and a steering wheel similar to the 918 Spyder's. Porsche's PCM touchscreen infotainment system is standard, and it can be optioned out to include navigation, Apple CarPlay, Google Earth and a Wi-Fi hotspot. While the 718 Cayman and Cayman S are technically on sale right now, deliveries won't begin until late November.

BMW premiering the all-new 3-Series at the ongoing Paris Auto Show, it鈥檚 provided us with an excellent idea of what the latest 4-Series will look like. Despite its badge, the 4-Series is little more than the two-door version of the 3-Series. The updated BMW 4-Series will premiere with practically all the same new design elements as its four-door sibling. This rendering from Aksyonov Nikita shows what it could look like. Compared to the previous-gen 4-Series, the new car will adopt a pair of more aggressive headlights inspired by those of the 5-Series. Additionally, the front kidney grilles have been sharpened and enlarged to give the car some additional character. Other alterations include more aggressive air intakes and sharp character lines running horizontally across the sides. Like the 3-Series, the new BMW 4-Series will probably be slighter larger than its predecessor and adopt a lengthened wheelbase. Down the road, BMW鈥檚 M performance division will get its hands on the new 4-Series. It may develop warm-performance models like an M440i and M440i xDrive and will certainly create an all-new M4. Like the old 4-Series, the new model will be sold in a selection of different body styles, including as a Convertible.

Porsche recently introduced two new 718 models, the Boxster and the Cayman. But these aren鈥檛 your normal Porsches, these new models have something missing for the previous incarnations, they have two less cylinders under the hood. Porsche is going back to its roots and giving these models a flat-4 engine. In 1948 when Ferdinand Porsche created the two-seater roadster the No. 1 Type 356, he fitted it with a flat-4. The engine was mounted in Type 356鈥檚 aluminum body and produced just 40 horsepower from its 1.1 liter engine. This was the basis for Porsche鈥檚 engine for years, until 20 years ago when they decided to launch a flat-6 into the Boxster, Cayman and the entire 911 line. However, with tightening emissions, fuel economy, and displacement regulations, the market has forced automakers to change. Gone are the days of the gas guzzling 3.0 liter 6 cylinders with 2 superchargers, and taking their place are the slimmed down 2.0 liter flat-4 with a single supercharger. The all-aluminum engine is offered in the new 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman models in two different displacements. Standard models are fitted with a 2.0-liter flat-4 that shares its 91-millimeter bore and 76.4-millimeter stroke with the 911鈥瞫 3.0-liter flat-six, while S models are fitted with a 2.5-liter flat-4 that has a slightly larger 102-millimeter bore.

With the very recent report of an all new cross-coupe SUV. VW made a surprise release of this concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. This is the first model to use the MQB chassis which will be used for the next Golf and Audi TT. With it's bold front end styling and sloping roof line, executive director of Volkswagen design Klaus Bischoff said "It is the future face of all VW SUVs". This concept which is smaller than the current Tiguan, offers a sporty SUV but is still capable of going off-road. Featuring all-wheel drive and powered by a TSI turbo-charged engine and two electric motors, this plug-in hybrid has a total of 262bhp. 0-100km/h is said to be close to 7 seconds. The cross coupe is also able of driving 25 miles in two-wheel drive on pure electric. No details or timeline have been released if this model will see production.

MV Agusta boss Giovanni Castiglioni has revealed the firm will unveil a new version of the Turismo Veloce 800 shortly. He gave away precious little details other than that it will have an 鈥榠nnovative clutch system鈥? The current Turismo has a slipper clutch, so it鈥檚 possible MV will just add a slip-and-assist clutch, which controls engine braking better. And it increases the clamping of the clutch plates under load, allowing lighter clutch springs and a lighter lever feel. That鈥檚 not very MV though and it鈥檚 thought they are looking at another option. An auto-clutch, made by Rekluse, could come as standard on the new MV. The clutch lever remains, so you still have fine control, but you don鈥檛 need it to start and stop. It engages and dis-engages automatically with the increase and decrease in revs. These systems make stalling virtually impossible and could make two-up town-centre wobbles a thing of the past. We also expect an engine revamp with an increase in power from the Veloce鈥檚 current 110 bhp to closer to 125 bhp. Electronically, the current model was well ahead of the pack when it was first launched in 2015 but the others have caught up, so MV wants to move things on again. ABS with rear wheel lift control but it鈥檚 not lean sensitive, so we expect MV to add cornering ABS to the updated model. The current model also has a full-colour TFT dash and Bluetooth connectivity, but we expect MV will join KTM and BMW by offering maps via a sat-nav in the dash.

Porsche Design has released a laptop that rotates 360 degrees and is rivaling the Macbook Surface Book. A laptop from Porsche may sound unusual, but the Porsche Design brand has steadily become integrated into the premium device market, and they unveiled their latest initiative just this week at the Mobile Congress in Barcelona. It鈥檚 worth noting the notebook鈥檚 hardware was finely done by Quanta, Intel, and Microsoft, the companies also responsible for helping develop and manufacture Amazon鈥檚 popular Fire tablets. Porsche Design鈥檚 Book One boasts polished aluminum housing with a flawless anodized outer appearance. The Porsche Design logo below the screen is surely distinctive, yet it鈥檚 tastefully understated enough to still be aesthetic. The laptop comes with a hinge design, similar to Porsche鈥檚 approach in crafting a sports car鈥檚 transmission, allowing the laptop to rotate 360 degrees while still unhinged. The Book One鈥檚 hinge also allows the display to close onto the keyboard with any gap. There are even small rubber stoppers to the hinge so that you won鈥檛 scratch the laptop in the various modes it flips to. The hinge is sturdy even when the tablet is locked into place. Inside, the Book One is an absolute power beast, featuring some of the newest and most powerful hardware around today. This includes Intel鈥檚 latest Core i7-7500U processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The Toyota Prius has been named the UK鈥檚 most accident-prone car, being involved in 111 crashes for every 10,000 examples of the model on the road. Data from GoCompare shows there were around 71,000 Priuses registered in the UK in 2016, with 787 accidents in the same year involving the model. Second place went to the Citroen Saxo, which had an accident rate of 106 out of every 10,000 examples. The BMW 330d was third with 102 out of every 10,000 being involved in a crash. In terms of brands as a whole, Vauxhall was the most accident-prone. Based on the 4 Series, the 2015 BMW M4 replaces the last-generation two-door M3, in line with BMW's latest nomenclature that uses odd numbers to denote sedans, and even numbers for coupes. While the M3 is a great all-around sedan that can go from the track to the grocery store with daily-driver practicality, the M4 looks more like a true sports car. Unlike the M3's more upright stance, the BMW M4 is slightly leaned-back, with a signature BMW twin kidney grille that is ever-so-slightly lower and wider. Large front air intakes are functional and give the M4 an aggressive look. Vertical vents alongside the front fenders channel air down the sides of the car. A rear integrated lip spoiler keeps the car planted, while a smooth underbody and rear diffuser help the M4 to slice through the air with as little resistance as possible.

And although the M4 also has a backseat, it's the kind of car you'd prefer to drive alone, or with one great friend. Compared with the last-generation M3 coupe, the M4 is substantially lighter, thanks in part to a body that uses a greater percentage of aluminum and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. Like the M3, the M4 gets a carbon fiber driveshaft and roof. On M4 coupes, the trunk lid is also made of carbon fiber. Another significant change includes the switch to electromechanical steering. Fans of hydraulic power steering tend to complain that electric systems are numb and unresponsive, but we found the M4's feel precise and direct. Drivers can also select from three modes that adjust the level of steering effort, independently from suspension and throttle settings. Handling is aided by a new five-link rear suspension, which is mounted directly to the body, giving the M4 a stiffer ride and more direct road feel. Most components are made out of aluminum, rather than steel, shaving off more weight. The only downside with the new setup is that it produces quite a bit of road noise.
