Where the steering wheel, dash, and pedals would be, there鈥檚 simply a bin with a screen mounted over it, showing an approximation of what the car sees, largely gleaned from its laser-scanning sensors.

We mashed 鈥淕O,鈥?the car responded with a brief countdown, and off we went around the parking lot, whirring like a tiny BART train鈥攁t speeds below 25 mph. As such, any estimated skidpad numbers, 0-60 figures, and other performance prognostications are rendered wholly baseless, so we won鈥檛 make them. What was interesting and frankly impressive was exactly how surefooted the system felt. Mercedes-Benz鈥檚 Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, perhaps the best self-driving system on sale today, feels positively primitive, tentative, and sketchy compared to the authority with which GumNut the Koala Car goes about its business. A man on a bicycle with a Rastafarian paint scheme shoots out from nowhere and the smartypants runabout slows its roll smoothly and surely, system unfazed by the two-wheeled miscreant. Its behavior is the result of 1.2 million miles traveled by the company鈥檚 autonomous fleet, a group of vehicles that continues to amass about 15,000 miles鈥?worth of data every week.

And while your average C/D reader may log more miles than that over the course of a year, Joe Schmuck Commuter very likely doesn鈥檛. The company points out that over the life of the program so far, it has amassed 90 years鈥?worth of driving experience. And unlike a 106-year-old driver, its servers鈥?reaction times are only getting faster. Our recent ride in Mercedes鈥檚 F015 Luxury in Motion concept left us suspicious that a nearby blacked-out Sprinter hid a pack of Swabians huddled over a console, controlling the car鈥檚 movements. If there was a cadre of Google-ites joysticking this wheeled Pikachu to and fro, we鈥檇 be surprised. We鈥檙e pretty sure little GumNut was acting pretty much on its own, save its mandate to follow a pre-planned route with defined start and stop points. Before our ride in the prototype, we went for a spin on city streets in one of Google鈥檚 Lexus RX development vehicles.

The 鈥榰tes are piloted by two-person teams, with one manning the controls and the other observing what the car 鈥渟ees鈥?on a laptop. And if the Lexus wasn鈥檛 quite as smooth as the Koalamobile, it was also faced with more demanding tasks, navigating neighborhoods, intersections, and other vehicles鈥攙ehicles driven by erratic, imperfect humans. Part of the reason Google鈥檚 machines are so good鈥攂eyond the miles logged鈥攊s that they鈥檙e running on roads the company has mapped in great detail. So is this little widget of an automatic automobile the future? Yes and no. It鈥檚 patently silly to think that self-driving vehicles aren鈥檛 the way forward. The potential societal benefits are too great. If nothing else, insurance companies hate to pay out, and autonomous vehicles have the potential to remove human fallibility from the equation. It鈥檚 a fool鈥檚 errand to believe that that Big Insurance won鈥檛 squeeze wallets and Washington to keep your hands off the tiller. Meanwhile, Google has gone on record that it doesn鈥檛 want to be in the car business; we鈥檇 expect the company to fall into the Tier I supplier realm, designing systems for automakers to install in their own vehicles. Certainly, Google鈥檚 tech makes the mildly autonomous systems on sale today seem patently rudimentary in function. But we do have one request: Whatever the brave (or pusillanimous) autonomous future holds for us, might we spec it with less teal Tupperware, please?

Mercedes-Benz Automates The Valet, And It Can Even Avoid Luddites Parking Themselves

No matter when or where you need to do it, parking can easily be the most frustrating part of a day out. Valet parking might sound great but, well, we鈥檝e seen Ferris Bueller鈥檚 Day Off enough times that handing over the keys to a stranger raises the anxiety level, too. Autonomous-driving technology could very well be the solution. Such automation is exactly what Mercedes-Benz has demonstrated in the multi-story parking building at the automaker鈥檚 museum in Stuttgart, Germany. To enable it, the driver would leave the vehicle on a valet-parking pad and turn over autonomous control of the vehicle to the automated valet by pressing a Park button on a smartphone app. The car is assigned a parking spot automatically and follows commands from the parking garage鈥檚 system to find it. When the owner is ready to return for the car, he or she can summon the vehicle back to an area adjacent to the valet-parking pad for a hassle-free exit. The automaker and the tech supplier plan to do an 鈥渆xtensive trial鈥?of the system after this week鈥檚 demonstration, followed by a commissioning phase.

Luggage space behind the Macan鈥檚 40/20/40-split folding backseat is a small 17.7 cubic feet that鈥檚 deep but narrow, and the aggressively sloped roofline doesn鈥檛 provide much room for taller objects.

Cargo space is more similar to a Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (17.2 cubic feet) or BMW X4 (17.7 cubic feet) than to the roomier X6 (26.6 cubic feet) or GLE-Class coupe (23 cubic feet). The Macan had not been crash-tested as of publication. Available safety systems include blind spot monitoring, called Lane Change Assist, and Lane Keeping Assist, which automatically nudges the vehicle after it veers from a lane. 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC [Teaser]

Mercedes-Benz has released a teaser video of the facelifted 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC prior to the vehicle鈥檚 world debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week. The short video of the tweaked SUV has it wading along a river and beyond the first second, shows virtually nothing of the facelifted GLC. Fortunately, the first second does provide us with a glimpse of the vehicle鈥檚 new fascia. The most obvious difference between the new GLC and the outgoing model are the different headlights, complete with revised LED daytime running lights. In addition, the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLC adopts a new grille with two horizontal slats rather than the one found on the current GLC. The model featured also has a much more rugged-looking front bumper incorporating a number of bolder silver elements. Mercedes-Benz won鈥檛 mess with the overall shape of the GLC but further tweaks are expected to be found at the rear, including alterations to the taillights which will see the reverse lights positioned under the brake lights. In the cabin, the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLC will be refreshed and will be outfitted with the automaker鈥檚 excellent MBUX infotainment system. Altered trims alongside other improvements such as a new wireless charging pad for cell phones will be part of the package too. Recent spy shots also revealed a newly designed steering wheel. Mercedes hasn鈥檛 offered any information regarding the powertrains that will be offered with the new GLC. However, we have an inclination that some engines from the facelifted C-Class could find their way into the updated crossover. This could include a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 255 hp and 369 Nm of torque.

Storage is acceptable, too. It feels spacious, and allied to the comfort, it means even long journeys in the XC40 aren鈥檛 too much of a chore. Testers鈥?notes: 鈥淭he XC40鈥檚 real appeal lies in its individuality. A range refresh last year, with new, higher-spec trim levels and added appeal has pushed the Mazda CX-5 even further upmarket and closer to the likes of Audi鈥檚 new Q3. Mazda is continuing its push upmarket, encroaching on the likes of the Audi鈥檚 territory. That means the Q3 faces pressure from conventional foes, but also from below as more makers want a slice of the premium pie. It鈥檚 as much about image and equipment as it is about dynamic ability in this class, though, and it鈥檚 here, with its new trim structure, that the CX-5 makes big strides forward. While badge prestige might still not match the Audi, there鈥檚 at least as much standard kit. Parking sensors, a reversing camera and lots of safety features - including autonomous braking, adaptive cruise and LED lights - heated leather seats, keyless operation, a power tailgate and sat-nav are all included. CarPlay and Android Auto are really the only options you might want to consider; they鈥檙e part of a 拢350 pack. Even though the CX-5 costs less than the Audi, the quality of materials is good. It doesn鈥檛 feel quite as upmarket, but then it鈥檚 not quite as expensive. The biggest deficiency compared with its competitors here is the tech, though. A lack of sharp-resolution graphics and a digital dash hasn鈥檛 been a huge issue in the past, but against rivals that boast these qualities as standard, it could make the difference to buyers. The CX-5 still drives as well as ever, even when fitted with the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder non-turbo petrol we鈥檙e testing.

The optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system, left in its softest setting, proved enough to keep the wheels from impacting harshly over even the roughest sections. After fielding countless questions about body rigidity, Porsche's engineers confided that the Targa is about 10 percent stiffer than the Cabriolet model upon which it is based (the Coupe is reportedly twice as rigid as the Cabriolet). Officials also say that the rigidity is the same with or without the Targa panel in place - it's not a structural part of the chassis, which improves suspension tuning. It seems no orientation with an open-roof car is complete unless Mother Nature is allowed to test its weatherproofing. As huge raindrops fell from the clouds, a quick detour to the side of the road had the Targa's roof secured back in place and the coupe sealed tight from the elements. Back at speed, the cabin was hushed.

My recollection is that the Coupe is still quieter (albeit with more tire noise), but the Targa's cabin levels are on par with the Cabriolet, which is itself impressive for a softtop convertible. Porsche says the 911 Targa will roll into showrooms at the end of June, and a full day with the new model leads me to believe customers won't be hard to find. While it lacks the single-minded sportiness of the enthusiast's-choice Coupe, the Targa is fresh and distinctive on the road. It accelerates quickly in most situations and feels energetic whether you're driving around town, cruising down the highway, or lighting up winding roads. The all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan is almost ready, and we expect to see it at an auto show in the coming months. Following its public debut, the brand鈥檚 rival to the BMW 1-Series Sedan and Audi A3 Sedan will arrive at dealers in select markets in August and it will be followed in 2019 by the sleeker CLA. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan will be available with a multitude engines, just like its hatchback sibling, and other derivatives. The list is said to include several 1.2-liter and 1.4-liter petrol units, along with the Renault-Daimler-developed 1.3-liter mill. As for the oil burners, while the five-door A-Class will likely use the 1.5-liter dCi diesel made by Renault, the Sedan is said to get only 2.0-liter four-cylinder units. The powertrain family might include a 48V PHEV model as well, pairing a 1.4-liter engine with a nine-speed automatic gearbox and offering a zero-emission range of 50 km. Mercedes-AMG will, at at some point, launch an AMG A45 Sedan variant that will challenge the likes of the four-door Audi RS3, using the same 2.0-liter turbo four of the next-gen A45 hot hatch.

The SRT8 returned for 2012, with a 465-hp, 6.4-liter HEMI fitted to the much-improved, new-generation Grand Cherokee. It's now simply known as the Grand Cherokee SRT. One such teething issue was how to get employees/new leaders understand the meaning of cultural fitment and further to avoid people/culture misfit cases early in their lifetime at the company. Not an easy problem to define, let alone attempt to solve it. We did try and delve into root causes and solutions to avoid these situations from happening. One root cause that emerged prominently was that employees or leaders themselves don't get enough feedback timely. Feedback mechanisms mostly are under-leveraged in most of the organizations. One could argue that for the feedback mechanisms to work, there really are 2 players. One is the feedback seeker, other is the one who provides the feedback. This division just about, sounds right. But if we broaden our view for a moment, there's another crucial consideration.

In addition to these 2 players there's also an invisible element called as intent. Simply put, if the intent to provide feedback or to receive feedback is missing then the feedback mechanisms won't serve the intended purpose. Mercedes-Benz E400d All-Terrain

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain will celebrate its second anniversary in September. However, the high-riding executive estate is still not available with a powerful diesel engine. But that鈥檚 about to change, according to MercedesBenzPassionBlog, as the three-pointed star鈥檚 Audi A6 Allroad and Volvo V90 Cross Country challenger will welcome a new powertrain in Q3. The twin-turbo 2.9-liter inline-six is entirely new, and already powers the E400d, S400d and new CLS 400d. It delivers an identical output of 340 PS and 700 Nm of torque in all three cars. Due to its high-quality interior, however, it feels just as upmarket as it ought to at this price. It uses a neat, clean design with a large portrait touchscreen and plush materials. The Volvo isn鈥檛 quite as luxurious as the BMW or Land Rover, although our top-spec Inscription Pro model is very well equipped. It comes with 21-inch alloy wheels, heated leather seats, four-zone climate control, a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment set-up with sat-nav, and a digital instrument cluster. A core part of the XC90 T8鈥檚 driving experience is the electric motor. It has 86bhp, which complements the petrol engine鈥檚 299bhp output, especially at low revs. As the engine is building speed and getting into its power band, the electric motor fills in with its instant torque (240Nm of it), so the XC90 is really quick off the line. We recorded a time of just 5.7 seconds from 0-60mph, which was more than a second faster than either of its rivals here, despite them having larger engines. The electric motor also allows for near-silent running at low speed, so driving around town is very relaxed in the XC90, not to mention efficient.

However, once the 2.0-litre petrol engine fires up the Volvo鈥檚 refinement is eroded compared with the Land Rover and BMW. Despite being slightly smaller than its rivals here, the Volvo is competitive when it comes to boot space. It has 262 litres available with all the seats up, which is more than in the Discovery (258 litres) but less than the X7 (326 litres). Fold the third row and it also has a bit more capacity than the BMW, at 967 litres. So while the XC90 is practical enough, it can鈥檛 match the Disco. However, the Volvo has the least total boot space and, perhaps more importantly, the rearmost seats are pretty small and won鈥檛 be of much use for adults. That鈥檚 unlike either of its rivals, which have loads of room in every seat. At least the Swedish car鈥檚 second row has plenty of leg and headroom, though. Volvo put in a decent showing in our Driver Power 2019 customer satisfaction poll, finishing 13th in the manufacturers鈥?standings.

The Swedish firm set a target of zero deaths in any of its cars by 2020, so there鈥檚 lots of safety kit.
