TOKYO (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. The company was outsold by General Motors Co. for the first time in six quarters, as sales in Japan extended their decline after government incentives for fuel-efficient models expired last year. Toyota and its subsidiaries sold 2.48 million vehicles during the quarter nded June, just shy of the 2.49 million that GM disclosed earlier this month. Toyota still holds the lead six-month lead over GM. But Japan's largest automaker sold 8.4 percent fewer vehicles in its home market last quarter. Toyota's decline in Japan car sales shows a rare weak spot for a company that's forecasting its biggest profit in six years and whose stock has gained 54 percent this year. Japanese vehicle sales have fallen steadily since the asset bubble burst in 1989, with temporary boosts from government subsidies. Jun Nokuo, an analyst with researcher R.L. Polk & Co. in Tokyo. Toyota's sales in the first six months of this year dropped 1.2 percent to 4.91 million units. GM sold 4.85 million vehicles in the first half and Volkswagen delivered 4.7 million, according to the companies.

Toyota, which reports earnings on Friday, Aug. 2, probably saw profit last quarter surge 48 percent to the highest in more than five years, according to the average analyst estimate compiled by Bloomberg. The yen has weakened more than 12 percent against the dollar this year and last week traded at 100 versus the greenback. 30 million to boost Highlander SUV production by a further 15,000 units a year from 2014. The plant will also hire 200 more workers, spokeswoman Carri Chandler said. Nissan Motor Co., which on July 25 reported a 14 percent increase in profit, has taken advantage of favorable exchange rates by cutting prices of seven models in the U.S., including its top-selling Altima sedan. Nissan saw sales surge 20 percent last quarter. Toyota has resisted following Nissan's price cuts and saw its sales in the country rise by 3.7 percent -- less than half the pace of the industry -- and its U.S. At GM, 18 new or refreshed vehicles are being brought into showrooms this year, transforming its lineup into one of the market's newest from one of the oldest.

One of the earliest new offerings, the 2014 Impala, was rated by Consumer Reports as the best sedan on the market -- a first for a U.S. The product push is part of CEO Dan Akerson's efforts to boost North American profit margins to 10 percent, stem European losses and increase China sales to 5 million, all by mid-decade. GM's rise to the top of the global industry capped a week in which the maker of Chevrolet cars and Ford Motor Co. posted earnings that beat analyst estimates. In China, where a territorial dispute led to a consumer backlash that cut demand for Japanese products last year, Toyota continued to lose market share to GM and Volkswagen. Toyota's sales climbed 0.6 percent last quarter, versus GM's 12 percent and Volkswagen's 16 percent, according to figures reported by the companies. In Europe, where auto demand is slumping to its lowest level in two decades, sales of Toyota and Lexus cars last quarter were little changed from a year earlier, reaching 215,734 units. That helped the company keep its market share at about 4.5 percent, according to Toyota.

With the unveiling of the new-gen Corsa earlier this week, Opel/Vauxhall engineers can now focus on the development of its sportier derivatives. Under PSA鈥檚 guidance, the German supermini, available with an electric powertrain like its French sibling, the Peugeot e-208. Further down the road, though, a couple of hot versions should be coming our way sooner rather than later. The most accessible of the two replace the current GSi , which uses a 150 PS 1.4-liter, turbocharged engine linked to a six-speed manual gearbox. Performance is respectable for a supermini, with the 0-100 km/h sprint taking 8.9 seconds and top speed standing at 207 km/h. Whether it鈥檚 not clear if the same moniker will be used for the all-new Corsa, it is very likely - and it could look similar to the rendering posted by XTomi. Compared to the rest of the new Corsa range, it features reworked front bumper and grille, as well as larger alloy wheels and a striking red paint contrasted by the black roof, side mirrors and other exterior elements. The other two renderings come via KleberSilva and portray the range-ropping Corsa OPC. A true rival to the likes of the Volkswagen Polo GTI, Ford Fiesta ST and Renault Clio RS, it sets itself apart with the sporty body kit, different grille and rear wing designs, and dual tailpipes. It would also add a more potent engine, given that its predecessor got a 207 PS 1.6-liter turbocharged four and hit 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.

The 2015 Porsche Macan GTS has been spied completely undisguised. Designed to slot between the Macan S and Macan Turbo, the GTS is heavily influenced by the latter model as it features LED daytime running lights, high-performance brakes and a four tailpipe exhaust system. There's no word on what will power the crossover but the Macan S has a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 340 HP (250 kW) while the Macan Turbo has a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 with 400 HP (294 kW). This likely means the GTS will have an output of approximately 360-370 HP (265-272 kW). The crossover is 4699mm long, 1923mm wide and 1624mm tall which makes it 146mm shorter, 16mm narrower and 82mm lower than its bigger brother. Compared to the Q5 on which is based upon, the Macan is 70mm longer, 24mm wider and 30mm lower. It adopts a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear arrangement with variable damping control and an electro-mechanical steering system, while optionally available is an air suspension.

Compared to the Audi Q5, the Macan's track widths are 35mm bigger at the front and 36mm at the back, while the suspension components are unique to this model. Later on during the car's lifespan there will be a new base model equipped with a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo engine providing 280 HP, along with a Macan Diesel with a 2.0-liter turbo. The Macan S and S Diesel ride on 18-inch alloys wrapped around in 235/60 R18 front and 255/55 R18 rear tires, while the Macan Turbo gets larger 19-inch rims with 235/55 R19 and 255/50 R19 rubbers. Clients can optionally configure their car with various wheel designs in sizes of up to 21 inches. Available at German dealers next April, the Macan S and Macan S Diesel have a starting price of 57,930 EUR and are followed by the Macan Turbo from 79,826 EUR (VAT included). UK will get the new Macan also in April at these prices: Diesel S (43,300 GBP), S (43,300 GBP) and Turbo (59,300 GBP).

In our day and age, Lamborghini is rightfully considered one of the most exclusive and elite automobile marques. It was born thanks to a good fortune and a fantastic talent of one person. Read more to find out about the world-famous Italian luxury car brand. 1. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. Lamborghini is an Italian automotive company that produces only high-end sports cars. Its headquarters is located in Sant鈥橝gata Bolognese, near the city of Bologna, Italy. 2. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. Feruccio Lamborghini and, oddly enough, Enzo Ferrari, who at that time already had been known as a famous manufacturer of sports cars. Feruccio Lamborghini himself was an accomplished engineer; he was an owner and manager of a successful company, which produced agricultural machinery. Feruccio loved sports cars and owned a Ferrari 250 GT. A rumour has it, that two great constructors had a conflict after Lamborghini had turned personally to Enzo Ferrari because of the broken clutch on his Ferrari 250 GT. It is believed that quick-tempered Enzo recommended Feruccio to deal exclusively with tractors, and never even touch a sports car.

Feruccio Lamborghini took it as a challenge resolving to use his assets, experience, and passion to found a company, capable of going toe-to-toe with Ferrari. 3. This may come up as a surprise to some of you, but Lamborghini never participated in any major motorsports competitions. According to the will of Feruccio Lamborghini, his company stayed away from racing, because the famous Italian engineer always believed the motorsports to be a big waste of time and resources. 4. One thing Lamborgini was always known for is its top-notch design. Some of the best professionals in the industry, including Franco Scaglione, Touring, Zagato, Mario Marazzi, Bertone, ItalDesign and Marcello Gandini, worked on its visual design. 5. People usually think of luxury and high-performance grand tourers, whenever someone mentions the name Lamborghini. Nevertheless, the Italian automaker has created few unusual models. Feruccio Lamborghini had an extensive experience in producing tractors, so it seemed natural for him to try his hand at designing an automobile with high off-road capabilities. Lamborghini LM002 was the first SUV, built by Italian vehicle manufacturer.

This is the BMW Concept X5 eDrive, a plug-in hybrid, which will make its debut at Frankfurt. It is based around a new-generation plug-in hybrid drive-train, which matches a 鈥榝our-cylinder, Twin-power Turbo engine鈥?- believed to be a petrol unit - with a 94bhp electric motor. The electric motor is backed up by a lithium-ion battery, which is packaged under the boot floor. BMW is claiming that the X5 eDrive can manage up to 75mph and up to 19 miles on battery power alone. It also says the concept can hit 62mph in 鈥榰nder 7 seconds鈥? On today鈥檚 EU economy cycle, the X5 eDrive returns 74.3mpg and 鈥榰nder 90g/km鈥?of CO2. Other changes, compared to the conventional X5, include minor cosmetic tweaks, specially designed roof rails and aerodynamically optimized lightweight alloy wheels. Three driving modes are offered: intelligent hybrid, pure electric or 'Safe Battery', which maintains the current charge level. The BMW is designed as a plug-in hybrid and is capable of being recharged from any domestic power socket, or dedicated charging points. Included in its boot is a compartment for storing the charging cable, reducing clutter and mess. The high-voltage battery developed for the concept is mounted in a 'crash-safe' position under the boot floor; BMW says the X5's load capacity is only 'slightly reduced' as a result. Sources say that the eDrive hybrid transmission is probably two years away from the showroom and is likely to coincide with the arrival of BMW鈥檚 all-new 5-series range, which will also get this drive-train as an option. BMW engineers are said to be aiming for a 50g/km CO2 emissions rating by launch.

TOKYO -- General Motors has done surprisingly well in Japan's shrinking market, notching three straight years of rising sales. But a dearth of right-hand-drive vehicles stymies hopes for higher volume. The redesigned Cadillac CTS and Chevrolet Corvette go on sale next year, promising another sales boost. But because both are left-hand drive, their arrival means there will be only two nameplates in GM's eight-model lineup with the steering wheel on the correct side for Japan, where cars drive on the left side of the road. The outgoing CTS is one of the three current right-hand-drive models. Gregg Sedewitz, GM Japan sales and marketing director, said last week at the launch event for the CTS and Corvette in Tokyo. After the redesigned CTS comes in April, GM's only right-hand-drive offerings here will be the Chevy Sonic small car and Captiva compact crossover. Failing to configure American cars for Japanese roads is a stumbling block for Detroit brands trying to break into this notoriously finicky market.

It's often a turnoff for Japanese, who can choose from a large selection of right-handers from European companies. Yet for the Americans it's a chicken-and-egg problem. It's often not worthwhile to introduce a right-hand-drive version because sales are so low. And sales are so low in part because there are no right-handers. Sedewitz said more right-hand-drive offerings are needed to break out of the niche level; GM sells barely 2,000 vehicles a year in the world's third-largest auto market. But left-hand drive isn't always a deal breaker. The current Cadillac SRX cross-over, also offered only in left-hand drive, replaced an outgoing version offered with right. But sales of that nameplate grew anyway. Japan's domestic auto market has been in steady decline for nearly two decades. Meanwhile, import sales are at record levels. GM Japan sales grew in 2010, 2011 and 2012. But so far this year sales of Cadillac and Chevrolet, the only two brands GM offers in Japan, are virtually flat at 2,241, according to the Japan Automobile Importers Association. GM's sales are way below their peak of the mid-1990s, when the company was selling 50,000 cars a year, most of them Opels. But in 2006 Opel decided to stop selling in Japan and other non-European markets as part of a refocusing of the brand on Europe. The 2009 bankruptcy further dented GM's Japan presence. GM has been a no-show for the past three Tokyo Motor Shows. GM is banking on better products and a refined marketing strategy to build sales slowly. The company is focusing on regional auto shows in such places as Nagoya and Osaka, instead of Tokyo. And it is revamping dealerships across the country. GM has only 33 outlets, compared with more than 180 for BMW.

The drivers in question are all members of the British Racing Drivers鈥?Club (BRDC) Rising Stars programme, which recruits promising young racers in the hope they will go on to forge a successful career in motorsport. The day starts with these rising stars showing what they can do in their natural environment: setting lap times on a handling circuit in Caterham Sevens. It鈥檚 a thrilling experience to watch, and no doubt an exciting one to take part in, but doesn鈥檛 the advanced driving test seem somewhat tame by comparison? We begin by asking this question of 24-year-old Max Coates, who competes in the Renault UK Clio Cup and is also a fully-qualified racing instructor. Coates admits he had some initial misgivings. 鈥淚 expected to be told to 鈥榞o slower鈥?and 鈥榙on鈥檛 have fun鈥?鈥?he says. 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 not been like that at all. Coates鈥?observer, David Baverstock, helped him prepare for his advanced test, and tells us his on-road driving was far removed from his racetrack behaviour. 鈥淗e was actually driving in a very reserved way,鈥?Baverstock explains. Despite some initial caution, Baverstock says Coates鈥?track instincts soon made themselves evident on the road.

鈥淗e tended to turn in quite early, which you may well do on track to widen the cornering line as much as possible and make the most of the available grip,鈥?Baverstock tells us. Baverstock鈥檚 role was 鈥渢o notice things about the way that the guys are driving and to suggest other approaches that they might try out鈥? He says Coates, and all the other racers he鈥檇 coached, are 鈥渞eally fast learners鈥?who are 鈥渒een to consider all kinds of different ideas and approaches鈥? Coates鈥?assessor, Shaun Cronin, is one of IAM Roadsmart鈥檚 many former police officers, and explains the advanced driving test assesses candidates on 23 individual categories. These include areas one would expect a racing driver to excel in, such as overtaking and gearchanging skills, together with aspects not normally associated with the track, like eco driving and courtesy to other road users. 鈥淭hey are very skilful drivers on the track,鈥?Cronin says.

There are similar parallels in cornering, Cronin explains. 鈥淎s they鈥檙e approaching a bend, they鈥檙e going to get the car in the right position; we鈥檙e asking the same,鈥?he says. 鈥淭hey鈥檒l then get the speed right by brakes; we want the same. On a passenger ride with Coates and Cronin, we witness the sorts of things the advanced test assesses. Approaching the crest of a hill and seeing a bin lorry parked on the side of the road, for example, Coates slows down in anticipation of binmen in the road. It鈥檚 a small detail, sure, but it鈥檚 indicative of the kind of broad forward thinking the advanced test expects of those taking the examination. 鈥淭he test is going to make the roads a safer place because drivers鈥?observation, anticipation and planning is much better,鈥?Cronin adds. But before considerations such as reduced premiums can be thought about, there鈥檚 the small matter of the test itself. All the drivers taking their tests today have passed, and because the full results are read out in the BRDC clubhouse, Coates is no doubt one of the happiest people in the room. Not only has he achieved the fastest time in the Caterham challenge earlier on, but he has also passed his advanced driving test with a first - the highest grade on offer. What is the key thing Coates has learned? 鈥淭he importance of how far you look up the road,鈥?he says. And if a driver as highly trained as Coates can say that, it鈥檚 fair to say an advanced test is likely to make almost any motorist better, and safer on the road. Taking you driving test soon?

Additional information is limited but Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz apparently showed an undisguised picture of the model during a presentation earlier this year. The image revealed the crossover had an IS-inspired front fascia with a prominent spindle grille and familiar LED daytime running lights that sit below the headlights. Design-wise the Lexus LF-NX Turbo concept has received a smoked chrome trim for the corporate spindle grille and its base now has a narrow, black mesh air intake sitting above a matt chrome-finished chin spoiler. In addition, the vertical front air intakes now have a high-gloss black trim with a black mesh duct finish. The back of the car shows a new lower bumper design with a full-width diffuser dressed in matt chrome. It also has dual chrome exhausts and new 20-inch alloys wrapped around in 255/45 ZR20 tires. Changes in the cabin are limited to the red illumination for the instruments, switchgear, door panels and roof. The NX crossover is expected to be previewed by a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year. The production model will likely follow sometime next year as a 2015 model.

A large portion of my driving happened on interstates, and the ride quality is pleasant, and in the event that I review the old auto, lodge clamor levels are perceptibly enhanced too. The turbo 2.3-liter, based on the 2.0-liter found in the Ford Focus ST, makes pleasant force and torque (however its a long way from overpowering or adrenaline pumping) particularly when revs move over 2,700 rpm or something like that. Take a gander at what tuners are doing to the Focus motor to effortlessly receive essentially more power and torque in return; expect a lot of that to vestige to this bigger four barrel too. A lot of individuals will recognize: it is unusual to flame the ignition and hear these turbocharged four-barrel sounds originating from under a Mustang's hood. The soundtrack is reminiscent of Audi's constrained impelling little motors, and it takes some getting used to. Not that the experience is repulsive, other than a few buzziness at high rpm; rather, it simply appears 鈥?wrong in a horse auto. Honestly, that resembles lip service on my part. A large number of us have for quite a long time pined for a more European-esque Mustang, and to gripe about it on the flipside now that we have one is meriting a hard jab in the eye. I really started to giggle at myself when these musings experienced my psyche when I got in the aut.

The company gets its name from Nikola Tesla, the inventor of alternating current, who went toe-to-toe with Thomas Edison (and won) to prove whether AC or DC was the preferred method of transporting electricity over great distances. In the same light, Tesla Motors is trying to prove that electricity is not only capable of transporting automobiles great distances but also that electric cars can be fun to drive. The company is the brainchild of Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning and PayPal founder Elon Musk. The founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, are also investors. This fresh blood from Silicon Valley is further evidence that Tesla is an entirely different type of car company. Tesla went about creating its first vehicle with the theory that nobody wanted electric cars because nobody had created an electric car worth buying. So they sought to correct the many perceived electric-car problems like range, recharging times, styling and performance. The company's first product, the Tesla Roadster, is capable of going about 250 miles between charges, which is a drastic improvement from the GM EV1's 60-90-mile range.

A complete recharge is accomplished in less than 2 hours. Recharging is accomplished via regenerative braking, a home recharging unit and an optional portable recharger. 100,000 sports car to enter the market as a way to establish "performance DNA" that would trickle down to less expensive models. Based on the Lotus Elise, the British-built Tesla Roadster is lightweight and svelte, capable of keeping up with other sports cars in its price bracket. Tesla promises 0-60-mph times around 4 seconds and a top speed of more than 130 mph. Throw in handling indicative of its Lotus roots and it should be obvious that the Roadster is one heck of a sports car. Tesla announced in February 2007 that it would be making a new sport sedan known as the WhiteStar, built at a new factory in New Mexico. 65,000 per car. Like the Roadster, it should have a range of about 250 miles, but with battery technology improving, that number could rise.

AMG 鈥?3鈥?badged model, but it does come with more than enough power to offer all the excitement one needs from an SUV. Found beneath the skin of the vehicle is a mild-hybrid 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six cylinder engine that鈥檚 paired with an electric auxiliary compressor. With everything in tune, the SUV pumps out 429 hp and 520 Nm but the electric motor can be called upon to add 22 hp and 250 Nm of torque when it鈥檚 needed. 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and tops out at an electronically limited speed of 250 km/h. The electric EQ Boost starter-alternator combines the starter motor and alternator into a powerful electric motor found between the engine and transmission. The electric motor doesn鈥檛 just add bursts of power but it helps to virtually eliminate all traces of turbo lag while also reducing fuel consumption and emissions. In addition, the EQ Boost starter-alternator powers the vehicle鈥檚 48-volt electrical system.

Power is provided by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 410 HP (301 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which enables the coupe to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 305 km/h (189 mph). In terms of efficiency, owners can expect to average 7.6 L/100km (30.9 mpg US / 37.1 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of 177 g/km. Speaking of performance, the model has also been equipped with a sport-tuned suspension and a high-performance braking system with discs that measure 370mm front / 345mm rear. The Alpina B4 BiTurbo Coupe will go on sale in May and an all-wheel drive variant will be available in certain countries.

Among the main exterior changes are headlights with black inserts, smoked taillights, GTS lettering on unique matte-black side strips, a gloss-black roof spoiler, and flat-black-finished tailpipes. For wheels, the GTS gets flat-black (or silver, as seen here) RS Spyder Design alloys measuring 20 脳 9 inches in front and 20 脳 10 inches in back wrapped in 265/45R20 and 295/40R20 tires respectively. Opening the driver-side door, we slide behind the heated steering wheel and find one of the most outstanding interiors we鈥檝e ever encountered in a Porsche. Every square inch of Nappa leather, aluminum, and plastic is of high quality and finished to virtual perfection. While all contemporary GTS models get nicely trimmed Alcantara-laden cockpits, our tester has an even nicer setup. 4,790 Leather Interior with Alcantara and the GTSInterior Package, which adds leather to areas like the door panels and dash. While it may not sound like much, it manages to make the interior even more inviting. The standard eight-way power seats are comfortable, but they take a lot of adjusting to reach a suitable seating position. When we lower the seat for a more sports-car-like feel, the cavernous space created above our head feels awkward.

When we raise the seat up higher, we feel more comfortable but also less like we鈥檙e in a sporty vehicle. This may sound like excessive nitpicking, but it takes some time to feel comfortable with the seating position in the Macan. And this is something we鈥檝e not really experienced in other new Porsche models. Next, we put our foot on the brake pedal and fire up the GTS. The turbocharged engine comes to life with the raspy sort of buzz from the standard Sport exhaust you鈥檇 expect from high-performance V6. It鈥檚 not an unpleasant sound, but it is also not as sweet as the notes you鈥檇 hear from a naturally aspirated or even turbocharged flat-six-powered Porsche. As far as V6s go, though, this one sounds tough. Accelerating down an onramp, the Macan鈥檚 engine output feels acceptable but honestly rather unexciting. While this SUV can, according to Porsche, run from 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds on its way to a 159鈥坢ph top speed, it doesn鈥檛 feel particularly thrilling. As we make our way along the first 20 miles of our drive, we rotate the mode dial mounted on the steering wheel hub at the four o鈥檆lock position to different settings.

In Normal mode, the ride is generally comfortable, but the air suspension produces a floating or slow bouncing sensation. In some instances at around 50 mph and above, it feels like the car is subtly rocking from front to back as it floats. In fairness, this isn鈥檛 something we encountered at slower speeds, and just turning the mode dial to the firmer Sport mode can quickly iron it out. Even so, this is an unexpected quirk. After a stop for dinner, we鈥檙e headed on a 110-mile drive east to California鈥檚 Gold Country. This leg of the trip entails about 40 miles on state highways and backroads with the rest on the freeway. Before leaving, my wife and I load the Macan up with the usual sort of long weekend getaway luggage: two suitcases, two backpacks, a few grocery bags, and a fishing pole and small tackle box. While the Macan accommodates this gear with ease, its sloping rear hatch鈥攚hich gives this SUV a sportier profile鈥攎akes fitting taller items near the back of the loading area more difficult. Back on the road, the freeway portion of this drive with the GTS in Sport mode yields a relaxed and uneventful experience.

1,380 Lane Keep Assists (LKA) & Lane Change Assist (LCA) option package is useful. LKA automatically corrects steering and gives an acoustic and visual warning if it senses you鈥檙e straying from your lane. LCA illuminates small lights on the inside part of the side mirrors when sensors detect a vehicle in your blind spot. Both are useful, but the latter comes in handy a lot more often. As we reach some windier sections of road, we switch between Sport and Sport Plus modes. When driving at about seven-tenths onto an onramp, we鈥檙e surprised by the amount of understeer the Macan produces. 鈥攚hich controls power distribution to the wheels in a way that results in more agility鈥攜ou can really feel the Macan鈥檚 4,178 lbs through the corners. It鈥檚 important to note that this machine came specially equipped with Michelin Latitude Alpin Winter tires, as we are headed towards a snowy area.
